Utah extension director William Peterson says major 1935 agricultural adjustment programs target offsetting 1934 drought effects. With normal conditions, U S farmers may lift grain output by about 70 percent over 1934, maintain truck crops and fruit, and expand cotton reserves. poultry and dairy outputs stay near 1934 levels, while hog, cattle and sheep slaughter declines ease due to policy.
J Howard Larsen county manager for the Federal Emergency Relief administration visited Gunnison surveying sanitation needs in the southern county. FERA offers labor plans and supervision for septic tanks and sanitary buildings with individuals supplying materials at roughly twenty one dollars, reducing with on hand supplies. The Army announces a Citizens Military Training camp at Fort Douglas Utah for 17 to 29 year olds from Utah Idaho Nevada and Wyoming. Mr and Mrs Wesley Duggins traveled to Salt Lake City for funeral services for William Thode, uncle to Mrs Duggins, who died in Los Angeles.
Won Childs, once living in Gunnison, spent Sunday in Gunnison visiting Mr. and Mrs. Geo Francis. He returned to Marysvale late Sunday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Sorenson marked their 50th wedding anniversary in Gunnison with 140 guests at the Scout lodge. The event featured a program, banquet, dancing, and a luncheon, honoring the long-time residents born in Gunnison and Malma Sweden, with ten children and sixteen grandchildren in attendance.
A broad coalition of stockmen sheep men sportsmen and forest and game officials approved a resolution to slaughter 600 female deer in Utah s Manti forest this year 200 in Twelve Mile district 250 in District 4 and 50 in District 5 while capping the south herd of elk at 609 head The plan which seeks a peaceful solution to game damage now awaits action by the State Fish and Game department with officials willing to follow the group s recommendations The meeting was led by James L Nielsen and included remarks from Newell B Cook and Regional Forester R H Rutledge The effort follows a March ة discussion on big game limits in livestock ranges in the Manti region
A year after senators defeated AAA amendments for dictatorial powers the same group presses for broader authority. Proposals would let the secretary substitute commodity payments for cash and license all in the handling of agricultural products, with power to fix prices and enforce contracts. This could expose farmers and businesspeople to wide invasions of privacy and threaten economic security unless voters act.
The Boy Scout picture show moved from February 5 to March 27 at the Casino. Proceeds fund new Scout headquarters in Gunnison ward chapel. The feature film No Greater Glory with short subjects aims to attract broad public support and benefit the Scouts. Lions club Columbia Pictures and Casino theatre back the event with 26 cent tickets.
Vearl A. Peterson of the Peterson gasoline and garage firm joined thirty Conoco gas dealers at Richfield for a district meeting. Assistant Division Manager Cope from Salt Lake addressed the group on gas sales and patron courtesy. A Dutch luncheon was served.
Milford hosts the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah on March 23 and 24 with sessions for officers and members. The Milford Lions plan a bridge tea, a banquet in the Union Pacific dining room, and a large dancing party. A Sunday trip to Lehman’s Cave is planned plus various club business matters and invitations to bring guests.
Centerfield ward Relief Society members served a sumptuous banquet at the Centerfield chapel on Monday evening, hosting husbands and the public. The party marked the anniversary of the organization with a St. Patrick’s Day themed program and green decorations.
J C Hogenson of the Utah extension service at Logan touts home fruit and vegetable growing. He says strawberries raspberries currants gooseberries and other crops can be grown in most counties with proper care including pruning weed control cultivation fertilization irrigation and spraying. Asparagus and rhubarb require little ongoing effort after establishing beds and provide years of food.
Mrs Wesley Duggins and Mrs Editha Rosenlund hosted a surprise party Monday evening for Mrs Mark Duggins. Guests arrived unannounced, then played bridge after luncheon. Prizes went to Mrs Geo Francis and Mrs Julius Duggins, with consolation to Mrs Geo Petty. gifts were given to the guest of honor.
Tra Overfelt of Gunnison Valley Bank reports a Treasury telegram offering a short time exchange of third-called Fourth Liberty Loan bonds for new treasury bonds. Eligible bonds end in 5 6 or 7 and must be exchanged by March 27. cashing ends April 15 1985. Contact the bank to verify bond numbers and arrange the exchange.
Mrs. Hansen celebrated her birthday with about twelve friends and relatives at the Hansen residence in Centerfield on Tuesday. An afternoon of progressive 500 preceded a late luncheon where she received well wishes and gifts from guests.
