Utah Driver Education Bill Aims To Cut Costs And Deaths
Utah lawmakers expect driver education in high schools to start in fall and to save lives and money. A new automobile driver education tax fund will fund reimbursements up to 90 dollars per student for behind the wheel instruction, while financing covers state approved courses and reduced insurance premiums. The plan targets 18 to 35 year olds, historically linked to over a quarter of fatal Utah accidents, and carries projected annual revenue around 350 thousand dollars.

Mayfield Miss Receives 4-H Chain Call
A 4-H dairy chain project sponsored by Manji City Bank awarded a Holstein heifer call to Darrell Twithe in Mayfield. The donor would return the first heifer to the bank, which would pass it to another member. Barbara Whitlock, daughter of Kenneth and Barbara Whitlock, won the third call from the original project, receiving the calf from Wayne Christensen of Mayfield. Barbara will raise the calf and return the first heifer calf to the bank, which will then pass it to another 4-H member, per Dennis Funk, County Agricultural Agent. A three-man committee reviewed eight applicants and selected Barbara with Carl Alder as alternate.

Chaperons Requested for State Tournament Students
Officials of the State High School Activity Association urge that students attending the Class D basketball tournament in Provo on March 11 13 14 be accompanied by an adult chaperone within the tournament city. Previous issues in hotels and motels prompted this call for school and parent cooperation though schools cannot provide chaperones. Daily travel to and from the event falls outside this recommendation but families and schools are asked to arrange supervision to avoid embarrassment for students and their families.

The Gunnison community held services for Ler Decker Bartholomew aged 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henne L. Bartholomew. He died February 25 after a rifle accident on February 22. Bishop LaMar Suewan officiated. the Gunnison First Ward choir performed. Speakers spoke of his church and school contributions as rites included a Boy Scout presentation, remarks by relatives, and songs led by the youth chorus from Gunnison Valley High School. Internment was in Fayette cemetery. pallbearers included family and Troop MA members.

Rites Held For Duane Tollestrup In Studio City
Funeral services were held at 1 pm in the LDS Chapel Studio City California for Duane Tollestrup killed in a highway accident February 3. Jacob Foote Returns Home After Injuries
Jacob Foote, who suffered a broken leg and bruises when knocked from a hay truck in January, returned home to Gutineon. He received care at Gannon Valley Hospital then was moved to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City where the leg was pinned. After release he visited with Elsey Foote in Orrin before coming here.

Harvey Madsen owner of Madems Billiards in Gunnison, underwent removal surgery at LDS Hospital Salt Lake City on February 28. Released from hospital March, he will stay with his mother Mrs Clarence Maden and report to the hospital at regular intervals until his eye heals. Doctors expect a second removal operation later.
