Professor J C Hogen extension agronomist at Utah State Agricultural College promotes seed testing before planting. The simple five day germination test uses two tin plates with wet sand and blotting paper to gauge germination rates, with 95 to 99 percent desirable and under 90 percent a warning not to plant.
The Democratic Ladies' Study Club will hold its first March gathering Friday afternoon at 8 in the Casino building. A mixed program features music, a talk on Roosevelt's inauguration by Mrs. John M Knighton, a current events paper by Miss Lois Overfelt, and a reading by Mrs. Royal Buchanan. The event invites the public regardless of political affiliation.
Utah farmers across 14 counties ordered 1088 planting units totaling 8700 small forest trees. The Utah State Agricultural College forestry department will begin shipments around April 1 to support windbreak and woodlot planting, with over 55 000 seedlings available this year. Siberian elm leads orders with 1078. other popular species include Siberian pea honey locust blue spruce and Prussian olive.
Gunni son ward M. T. L. A. presents an 8 pm program at the Casino theatre for the Gunnison ward chapel fund. Directors Mrs. Leslie Kidman and Lawrence Edwards announce musical numbers, dances and two burlesques featuring many city performers and students.
Mr and Mrs J M Knighton hosted a turkey dinner and bridge solo party Saturday evening. The event honored guests Mr and Mrs W H Pingree and Lewis Larson of Manti with twenty four guests served at seven. Washington day colors framed price cards, tables had sweet peas and ferns, and in the ladies bridge contest Mrs J E Metcalf won first prize with Mrs Julius Duggins second and Mrs Edd Jensen consolation.
Gunnison defeats Wasatch 33 to 29 in a San Pete league battle as Pritchett and Beck lead with 10 points each for Gunnison while Cherry and Ballow pace Wasatch Academy with 10 apiece. Wasatch briefly led in the first half and surged late, but Gunnison prevailed.
The 1933 crop production loans of 90 million dollars from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation require a 30 percent reduction in acreage planted to cash crops as a condition of borrowing. Regulations list specific minimums by crop and specify limits, eligibility, and terms for farmers in all counties, with a 6. percent interest rate and notes due by October 31, 1933.
Cox ranger for the Manti forest reports a count of more than 700 deer in Twelve Mile canyon last Wednesday and Thursday. Accompanying him were R. L. Turpin deputy state game warden Orange Olsen and Supervisor J. W. Humphrey. Counting will continue as weather allows. The deer are in excellent condition despite severe winter cold.
Hyrum Christiansen was sustained as bishop of the Gunnison ward at a two day L D S conference in Gunnison. He succeeds Bishop Leslie Kidman who resigned after eight years to aid his recovery from injuries. I L Henrie named first counselor. second counselor to be named soon. George Albert Smith from Salt Lake spoke on Word of Wisdom urging adherence to church teachings. A musical festival closed the sessions with large attendance.
Snow College basketball secured a place in the state A A U basketball classic set for March 6 7 and 8 according to captain Tony Villard He teams with Richard Peterson Howard Lund Dee Green Lee Christensen and Guy Leonard in a lineup that includes last year’s all star Villard previously scored as a guard Villard also visited with his parents over the weekend The Snow team will play Salina Wolverines Saturday night Meanwhile Miss Blithe Sanders hosted a birthday gathering at Spearmint for twelve guests marking her 12th birthday with indoor games a hot dinner and a 12 candle cake
Mrs J B Roeper hosted a Saturday afternoon luncheon bridge for 16 ladies. After a dinner at 1:30 on small tables a lively bridge game followed with prizes won by Mrs W L McIntyre and Mrs N L Hermansen.
W Harvey Ross resigns as president and general manager of Gunnison Sugar, tendered in January and accepted by Wrigley interests. His successor to be named at April 1 reorganizational meeting, with 1933 beer campaign plans unaffected. D H Whittenburg also resigns as agriculturist, staying to ease transition.
E H Bardsley of the Federal Land Bank of Berkeley returned home Monday evening after a two week trip to the coast. He visited the Berkeley bank in service, gained wider knowledge of operations, and found coast business conditions still sluggish.
The Salt Lake Union Stock Yards announces March 6 reductions in commission charges for livestock sales. A $3 per car cut on sheep and cattle and a $2 per car cut on hogs, plus lower selling charges on trucked-in stock, aim to save stockmen selling at the market.
Mr and Mrs James Bown and Mrs Howard Norman motored to Salt Lake the first of the week Mrs Bown continued her trip to Cornish to visit with daughter Mrs Douglas Bergeson for a few weeks Mr Bown and Mrs Norman returned to Gunnis on Monday evening
