A retrospective view of the past year in the American economy notes progress in consumer goods sectors but stagnation in core industries like steel and railroads. It discusses high public relief, rising operating costs from taxes, and unclear employment gains as recovery remains uneven moving into a new year.
The Future Farmers of America club at Gunnison Valley High School hosted a fathers and sons banquet on December 22. About 140 attendees enjoyed a meal, program, and group entertainments, with 60 fathers present.
Joseph Larson resigns as bishop of the Hamilton ward due to ill health after nearly five years in office. John M. Anderson named to succeed him with Earl Pickett and Leroy Sorenson as counselors. A H Kearns and James C Jensen reassigned, with Jensen retained as ward clerk. Larson helped expand the ward lodge project and improve facilities.
Mrs J A Hagan acted as gracious hostess for a misc shower at the Hagan home on Saturday night. The event honored her daughter Mrs Don Dauwalder formerly Julia Hagan who with Mr Dauwalder is holidaying with Dr and Mrs Hagan. A seven oclock hot dinner fed thirty six guests followed by progressive bridge and rock. Mrs Dauwalder received many gifts including silk silver and dishes.
Mr and Mrs R H Pardew of Grand Junction Colorado announce the birth of a nine pound baby boy born to Mrs Pardew on Christmas day Reports say both mother and son are doing splendidly Mrs Pardew before marriage was Vada Peterson daughter of Mr and Mrs J S Peterson of this city The couple have many friends here to rejoice with them Mr and Mrs D E Borg visited their son Kenneth Borg in Richfield for a special holiday dinner also attending were Mr and Mrs Elvin Tuft of Monroe
Brigham Young University in Provo Utah announces its fourteenth Leadership Week from January 28 to February 1 with plans from 25 departments. Over 100 sessions will feature intermountain religious social and governmental leaders and experts in science and tech. Entertainment includes a Shakespeare play daily one act plays concerts and educational films. Thousands of community leaders from 70 stakes attended last year with visitors from Canada Mexico Hawaii and Chicago. Mrs S Melmeren traveled to Tucson Arizona for the death of her sister Mrs J W Adams. burial will be in Arizona beside her husband a Spanish American War veteran.
Drastic cuts shaped the proposed 1925 Sanpete county budget at a public meeting in Manti. Taxpayers pressed for higher expenditures in some areas, including a $600 item to hire a county agent that was later removed by the commissioners. Deputy hire funds for sheriff and treasurer were slashed, and the county attorney's deputy hire was cut entirely. Salaries of county officers will be reduced by about 10 to 15 percent for four years. Dr. T B Beatty urges Utah mothers to respond to the Register Your Baby campaign noting 8000 cards filed and 4000 still outstanding. The effort, led by the State Health Board and Utah FERA, seeks complete birth registration and national leadership in card return rates. Also reports on Utah farm forestry work in 1934 with 41 740 trees planted on 258 farms and 219 4 H forestry club participants.
N R Pournier general superintendent for Telluride Power Company arrived from Richfield Wednesday to inspect the local branch and confer with Norman Johnson the local manager.
Mrs. Don Dauwalder formerly Julia Hagan was the guest of Mrs. J B Roper at a well appointed miscellaneous shower. Twenty young social set members attended. After dinner guests played bridge with prize winners Eldred Buchanan Theron Clinger and M Garlick. Gifts of silver linen towels and useful articles were opened. Miss Ethel Maylett of Salt Lake City visited sister Mrs James P Mayer.
Gunnison Bulldogs triumph 49 to 40 over Marysvale in a late pre season game boosting confidence. Dean Andersen leads scoring with 24 points as Gunnison shows its strongest effort yet and prepares to open league play January 11 at Moroni.
Four hundred intermountain Ford dealers met at Hotel Utah Salt Lake City to view the new 1935 Ford V-8 and hear addresses on salesmanship and Ford campaigns. G W Sorenson Centerfield distributor Harold Spencer and Vermile Draper attended. Henry and Edsel Ford broadcast from Dearborn and engineers spoke. The event included a banquet and Ford Orchestra, highlighting the center-poise riding all steel body and stylish design.
Robert Rulon Olsen aged three and a half died New Year’s Day at noon after eleven weeks of whooping cough that worsened into pneumonia. Survived by parents Rulon and Erma Olsen and grandparents J. P. Olsen of Scipio, funeral Friday at 11 with Bishop John M. Anderson presiding. A sister died in infancy. burial in Gunnis. A. L. Duffin visited from Los Angeles. Duffin’s parents will visit indefinitely.
Ranger Thursby’s January 1 1936 report notes limited snow on lower ranges near Ephraim and deeper snow higher up at Great Basin with water content of 5.19 inches this year down from 5.72 inches average over thirteen years. December precipitation at Oaks station was 0.77 inches and Great Basin saw 1.68 inches with 6.19 inches water at mid elevations.
Leslie Kidmien and Miss Le jons Kidman now reside in Salt Lake City visited relatives and friends in Gunnison last Thursday.
Mrs Lavar Wilson traveled from Salt Lake City to spend a week surrounding New Year’s with her parents Mr and Mrs A H Kearns.
