Turkey Growers Profit By Pool
The Northwest Turkey Growers association reports a Christmas pool totaling nearly 100 carloads or 2,000,000 pounds. Utah contributed about 25 carloads or half a million pounds from some 2,000 Beehive State growers. The NW pool will exceed $500,000 for 12,000 producers across seven states, with Utah at least $125,000. Top grade turkeys shipped from Utah and other states are expected to net about 29 or 80 cents per pound, the highest price this year in America.

Gunnison Pioneer Austin Kearns Dies in Gunnison
Austin Kearns pioneer, philosopher and historian died at his home after a period of ill health. Born September 2 1845 in Boneparte Iowa he moved west with his family in 1850 and joined early Utah settlements. He served in Black Hawk wars and later helped treaty with Native leaders. Surviving are seven children thirty nine grandchildren and many relatives. Services held Tuesday at Gunnison high school auditorium with Bishop Jos A Larson presiding.

While stockmen report livestock faring well, residents face frozen pipes and fuel shortages as plumbers coal men and auto workers scramble for thawing and repairs.
