Burglars Loot Axtell Store and Postoffice

Thieves burglarized the Axtell post office and Despain’s store in a connected heist. They forced entry under a light, opened a padlocked door with hammer and pry, rummaged the premises, and stole groceries and other goods valued at about $10. No money was found. post office letters were taken. Local officials, including Sheriff Ed Peterson, investigated with no immediate leads.

Marriage Announced Leland Foote Weds Miss Tanner

Leland Foote son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Foote of Gunnison married Miss Lillie Tanner daughter of Mr and Mrs N W Tanner of Salt Lake City at the Salt Lake temple last Friday. The ceremony was attended by Jacob Foote and Arnold Foote. Leland, a Gunnison native, served as a missionary in the southern states and works in insurance. The bride is active in church and social circles in Salt Lake City. The Foote couple will reside in Salt Lake City.

Wide Awake Bridge Club Luncheon Hosts Twelve Guests

Mrs. J. M. Knichton entertained the Wide Awake bridge club and guests Saturday afternoon. Twelve guests played cards with favors won by Mrs. Ray B. Metcalf and Mrs. J. K. Mecalf. Guest prize went to Mrs. Charlotte Villarc. A four oclock luncheon followed.

Widow C M Edwards Receives Weekly Compensation

Mrs. C M Edwards widow of C M Edwards receives weekly compensation of 12 65 for 312 weeks totaling 3946 80. State industrial commission orders Sanpete County to pay hospital and burial bills. Edwards died after a collision while en route to Salt Lake as officers hunted burglars in Gunnison.

Popular Japanese Bride Matsuye Kaneko Weds Salina Miner

Miss Matsuye Kaneko daughter of Mr and Mrs I Kaneko prominent in Westview Japanese colony married Sanjiro Araki of Salina employed at Sevier Valley Coal mine. The ceremony occurred at the county courthouse in Manti with Ernest J Mortensen officiating. They returned to Gunnison for a private reception. The couple are well known in the region and this marriage is likely the first of its kind in the county.

Four-Team Gunnison Stake Basketball Schedule Set

The Gunnison stake features Gunnison Mayfield Centerfield and Hamilton in a two half league from December 1 to February 17. First half games run December 1 8 14 22 29 and January 6. Second half begins January 13 with matches through February 17. Centerfield defeated Hamilton 19 to 10 in the opener.

Budget Process for State and County Expenditures

Sale at Poor Farm Nets County 1400 Dollars

The Sanpete County poor farm stock hay and household effects were auctioned after the board decided to close the farm. An auction in November netted 500 dollars for the county, and on Monday June Metcalf oversaw the sale of farm implements and effects, bringing total proceeds to 1400 dollars.

Dr. Lee De Forest, famed father of broadcasting, complains that radio has degraded into vulgar advertising. He faults 1927 licensing and self supporting stations for glamorizing blaring ad buys. He argues education and culture were his goal, but commercialism floods airwaves with tasteless products.

Cooperation Dances Proving Big Winners

Cooperation dances between Gunnison and North Sevier bring students and faculty closer. Over 100 Gunnison Valley students with basketball teams traveled to Salina for the first event. Salina teams defeated Gunnison squads. Tomorrow North Sevier guests visit Gunnison for a 2 p.m program, 7 p.m games, and a concluding dance.

Charity Bridge Tea Party Big Success in Gunnison

Gunnison Business and Professional Women club held a bridge and rock event at the Gunnison hotel to raise funds for yuletide baskets. About sixty guests enjoyed five rock tables and nine bridge tables with a luncheon at eleven. Net receipts exceeded 15 dollars and funds will buy foods, presents, nuts and candies for needy local children.

Lieutenant Irvin M. Hansen stationed at San Pedro on the U S S Oklahoma with Mrs. Hansen has returned to the coast after visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Allmendinger. Esther Hurd of Cleveland and guest at Mrs. H W Cherry in Salina spent Tuesday as a house guest of Mrs. Kimbal Larsen. Mrs. Wesley Duggins returned home Friday after visiting Salt Lake with her infant daughter who had a minor operation.

Budget Hearing Set on County 1932 Budget in Manti

Chairman June Metcalf announces a public hearing by the Sanpete county commissioners in Manti on Monday December 28 to discuss the tentative 1932 county budget. The budget has been approved by the board but taxpayers and citizens are invited to give their views.

Gunnison Welfare Drive Draws Big City Support

The Gunnison Lions club organized a large relief drive at the Duggins building warehouse. Food and cash raised exceed 160 in food value and 80 in cash with hundreds of volunteers, a matinee for children, and an all ages charity show at the Casino. Donations include sixteen sacks of flour a quarter beef a whole mutton six sacks of coal and more. The Gunnison Community Welfare committee formed to oversee ongoing distribution will operate with two relief groups in the ward.
