Ranger reports estimate big game in District No. 1 Twelve Mile and canyons. The 1500 deer 150 elk 4 bears 10 lions and 176 coyotes and cats are cited. Snow and mating season affect visibility and range use as deer move south to winter range.
The report compares 1929 and 1930 rainfall across Emery Price Great Basin Alpine Oaks and Manti stations. Alpine shows higher totals in 1930 and may be unreliable due to wind-driven rain missing gauges. Top-of-mountain rainfall likely exceeds valley stations.
Gunnison stake conference at the high school featured George FP Richards of the Council of the Twelve and Chas Hansen as principal speakers. Reorganization elected officers for the stake including high counselors and Y M M I A leaders with Rich ards family members in attendance.
Thelma Hammond daughter of Milton and Mrs Hammond of Fayette married Mrval James son of Mr and Mrs Windom James in Nephi last week. The couple, after a Fayette reception, will reside in Fayette. Mrs James is a Fayette social and church leader. Mr James is a prosperous farmer. Also, funeral services for Mrs Marguerite Dorius wife of Bishop C R Dorius were held in Ephraim Friday attended by Mr and Mrs Charles Rasmussen.
The LDS Church issued a limited edition commemorative book titled One Hundred Years documenting its first century. Compiled by George D. Pyper under the Centennial Celebration committee, it features 150 illustrations and essays by leaders such as George Albert Smith and James E. Talmage. Distribution will be by allotment to missions and stakes.
A short anonymous grace attached to Chester Cathedral humorously pleads for digestion a healthy body and mind and a sense of humor. It asks for upright sight of sin and the grace to share happiness with others with a note credited to John Graham.
At the Dover Irrigation and Canal Company annual stockholders meeting five new directors were elected to serve next year. G H Pickett Howard Roberts C H Childs Ray B Metcalf fill the board with Elmer Bartholomew elected to replace James Bown who resigned due to ill health. Officers to be named by the directors later. Plans include division gates and watermaster supervision to prevent water theft.
Thanksgiving week brought visits from numerous relatives and friends. Mr and Mrs Waldo Villard, Mr and Mrs Hart Sanders, and many others hosted or joined dinners. Notable mentions include A S Crane at the capital, W Harvey Ross visiting Spearmint, and a补 diverse social calendar with students from Snow college and Wasatch academy. A baby boy arrived to Mr and Mrs Merrill Pickett on Thanksgiving Day.
The state will wage a campaign to educate all illiterates. Utah's 1920 illiteracy figure ranks ninth nationally. native white illiterates rank sixth. County data show Rich at 0.4 percent illiterate with 98.9 percent school attendance, San Juan at 26.9 percent illiteracy with 63.8 percent attendance.
About 2,000 Utah turkey growers will share nearly 250000 dollars from the Thanksgiving gobbler pool, covering 750000 pounds of birds. The Northwest Turkey Growers Association controls most of Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon and Nevada production with prices 5 to 7 cents higher than independent pools. Final payments are mailed, with top prices for U S prime young toms at 22 to 29 cents and lower grades down to 14 cents.
In a lively election on Wordnes day, 432 voters cast ballots as new members gain seats. Olsen defeats Knighton in Gun nnison precinct by 270 to 162, with Bradley 129 and Christensen 122 in precinct 3. In Mphraim precinct Thorpe leads with 242 votes, Eggrertsen 207, Wil Tardson 150, Darius 66, Pederson 60, and Hangen 11.
The Gunnison ward M. J. A. sponsors a Christmas Gift party on December JOM at 7 p m in city hall. In the program a one act play In the Making features Marie Gledhill Lorraine Christensen Eliza Modeen Ruth Lersoh Robert Gledhill and Lawrence Edwards. Gifts and other items will be on display.
Br. Be S. McQuarrie, long associated with Beaver and former student of George Washington University, has opened offices in the Gunnison Valley Bank building after a postgraduate course. He arrived with his wife and young child and plans Gunnison as their permanent home.
The attendance officer W H L Bailey reports many youths ages six to eighteen fail to respond to attendance calls. Cases with no response may go to juvenile court soon. Some students receive fee waivers or free books as the district aims to improve school attendance and adjust high school programs.
Alten Christensen, a shareholder in Motes chain, plans to open Christensen’s Inc. Thrift Store No. 8 in Gunnison on Saturday December 6. The store will mirror the company’s other locations in Manti and Richfield and operate under the same business plan.
