Jacob Hans Ernsten 29 a former Gunnison resident died at a Salt Lake hospital after a lingering illness from cardio renal He was born April 22 1905 in Loa moved to Gunnison at age 12 and later worked as a barber in Salina Richfield and nearby towns He later farmed near Leaburn until illness and is survived by his widow Earie Hansen two children Donald and Shirley his mother Mrs L H Brick a brother Ivan Ernsten and other relatives Funeral services were held Monday in the Loa ward chapel conducted by Bishop William Rex Brian.
S. M. Jorgensen of Salina announced that the federal sheep buying program will start early in September. He noted the plan aims to aid the Utah sheep industry while potentially affecting local sales and markets.
Miss Erma Lundeberg longtime Gunnison church worker and J C Penney clerk was taken to Salt Lake City hospital after weeks of ill health. Doctors plan to operate to correct the affliction as her mother and relatives accompany her and monitor her condition.
Utah duck hunting rules for 1934 announced by Newell B. Cook state fish and game commissioner following guidance from Jay N. Darling. Season runs from sunrise October 12 to December 16 with hunting on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays. Daily bag 12 and 24 in possession with up to five canvasback redhead eider ring neck great scaup lesser scaup blue wing teal green wing teal cimnnamon teal shoveler and gadwall allowed. geese limit four per day eight in possession.
Utah Emergency Relief Administration reports that from July 2 to August 16, 19 152 beeves and 2 196 calves from depleted Utah ranges were canned, producing 1 693 640 pounds of beef for relief rolls across all counties.
District Governor J. W. Thornton reports Lions clubs across Southern Utah are advancing service work. He toured Gunnison Richfield Scipio Nephi and Nephi with city officials to plan a district convention in Richfield in 1934 and a swimming pool project funded by FERA.
Mrs Dean Bawden formerly Miss Trlma Francis who was married in early August attended a miscellaneous shower at the Kimbal Larsen home Wednesday evening. Hostesses Mrs Larsen and Mrs Wesley Dug pins led over thirty guests who began with card games and then watched Mrs Bawden display a range of gifts including glassware pillows dishes silverware cooking utensils towels and more. A luncheon followed at eleven o clock.
The Daughters of Utah Pioneers postpone their meeting to Monday September 10 in the Gunnison ward chapel. A short program will run during the business session with a ladies chorus, a talk by Mrs. Joseph Willardson, and a reading by Betty Lou Anderson. Refreshments will be served.
Mrs. June Metcalf hosted a Tuesday afternoon party for relatives celebrating the 70th birthday of her mother Mrs. Joseph Willardson. Twelve daughters and granddaughters attended a long table luncheon with a crystal verbening centerpiece. Mr. and Mrs. Hyrum Pedersen of Grace Idaho and Mr. and Mrs. N K Van Noyes of Preston Idaho visited and rode home Saturday after several days here.
South Sanpete school district sets September 5 as the first day of classes after Labor Day. Institute for teachers Tuesday, student registration Wednesday, and formal classes begin Thursday with a filled teaching staff except the Canterfield principal post. The board reports a sinking fund near 23 000 dollars and 47 000 dollars in uncollected taxes, with warrants for 1932 33 largely covered.
The Gunnison Valley bank received from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation the official signs to hang at all windows as visible proof that deposits are insured. The FDIC notes insured banks protect up to 5000 dollars, covering over 97 percent of depositors. If a bank closes, the corporation pays depositors promptly, aiding recovery and limiting community disruption.
