Gunnison celebrated the new swimming pool in a Sunday opening attended by over 1000 residents. The bathers enjoyed scenes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as the pool facility, costing about 6000 dollars with ERA labor, nears completion with fencing lighting and a spring board, plus separate locker rooms and a children’s 16 to 18 inch depth area.
Gunnison Day organizers in Salt Lake City announce the annual Gunnison reunion for 1935 to be held Saturday August 24 at 4 PM at Liberty Park grandstand. Hundreds of Gunnison and Salt Lake residents are expected for a day of programs, a picnic, and socializing with musical numbers and addresses.
R K Gaddie chief chemist for Gunnison Sugar and Mrs Gaddie return to Gunnison after eight months in Milwaukee Wisconsin where he worked with the Northwestern Chemical Manufacturing Co generating research in the lab. They toured St Pierre the stratosphere bowl and the summer White House and noted a Cubs Cardinals game in Chicago won by six to five with Dizzy Dean starring. They express happiness to be back in Utah.
Mrs Blain Larson entertained the Junior bridge club at her home on Wednesday evening. High score prize went to Mrs Bert Gribble with Mrs Norman Johnson second, guest prize to Mrs F H Jones, and consolation to Mrs Lenard Buchanan. A luncheon was served before the game.
Mr and Mrs Hart J Sanders hosted an elaborate dinner Sunday in Gunnison for Mr and Mrs R T Harris Mr and Mrs Dean Brayton of Salt Lake and Mr and Mrs R K Gaddie who recently returned after eight months in Milwaukee Mr Harris president of the Gunnison Sugar company and his wife visited from Salt Lake and met with the factory officers before the guests left for Salt Lake later that day
Mrs. C. H. Jay born April 15 1885 in Gunnison died suddenly at her Denver home after illness that began Sunday. She married C H Jay in 1910 and had three children Helen Lampert Clyde and Francis Jay. Survived by her mother Mrs J L Kearns sister Mrs Peck and brothers Hugh Kearns Rex Kearns.
Gunnison Lions Club backs hiring a county agricultural agent for Sanpete with $1,000 local funding and matching federal support. A special county commissioners meeting at the courthouse Friday at 2 p.m. is urged to endorse the plan amid calls from residents and petitions across the county. The move addresses historical gaps since C. O. Stott’s retirement and aims to reduce costs in AAA programs noted after wheat allotment losses.
Rex Mitchell from Salina stopped by on Tuesday to talk with Mrs. Mitchell who is staying with her parents Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Borg for a while.
Ira Overfelt of this city W R Overfelt of McGill Nev Jess Martineau and L R Martineau of Salt Lake fished Fishlake early last week. The four anglers used no banned bait and landed several big fish including an 18 pound Mackinaw by W R Overfelt. total two days catch neared sixty pounds.
The Gunnison Gunners defeated Spring City 9 to 3 on Sunday to close the 1955 baseball season. Gunnison finished the last half with four wins and three losses, nine and six for the season. Christensen pitched strongly allowing seven hits and eight strikeouts as Gunnison moved toward a higher class of play next year.
Rural youth issues will be explored at a 4-H leaders institute at Utah State Agricultural College September 4 5 6 Speaker Eugene Merritt from the U S Department of Agriculture will share insights on youth and vocation with 200 leaders expected from across the state. Delegates aged 16 years and older will form committees to relay findings back to their communities.
Last Thursday results show Lions and Fayette tied for first with four wins and one loss. Wrigley beat Axtell 2 to 1, Tigers defeated Cubs 4 to 1, and Lions beat Fayette 7 to 6. Tuesday games continued close, with Lions and Fayette again strong as Axtell won its first league game 3 to 2 over Cubs.
Four residents including Mrs J L Kearns Mr and Mrs Rex Kearns and their daughter Marie were injured when their car left highway 40 near Grand Junction Colorado and plunged into a ditch. They received first aid then were taken to Grand Junction and Gunnison for treatment as doctors evaluated injuries and planned further transport.
Ira Overfelt R J Frandsen and F H Jones toured Ogden to inspect a new large killing and cooling plant opened by local turkey growers. The event drew hundreds of growers from across Utah, who enjoyed a Dutch lunch and a warm reception. The Gunnison group returned Sunday. Mr and Mrs Merrill Peterson and Mr and Mrs Wesley Duggins visited Fishlake over the weekend.
The water commission led by J M Knighton and Ephraim Bergeson surveyed the Piute Reservoir and Carbon Water company projects and met with Governor Blood and the state land board. Knighton departed for Salt Lake to confer with fellow members after presenting data that highlights the Piute system as the weaker state project and notes farmer and stockman protests over debt obligations.
