The valley received heavy rain last Friday and Saturday, soaking ground and aiding alfalfa and crops. Hail caused minor damage to beets and grains near Centerfield, but overall outlook improved as sun returned and grass started in the mountains, stock in good condition.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Overfelt entertained Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Okelber ry of Goshen and Mrs. R. G. Jensen of McGill Nevada last Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Jensen, sister of Mr. Overfelt, was returning from trips to Texas and Missouri cities and stayed on to visit before continuing to Nevada.
The June Sugar issue notes US sugar use rose 11.5 percent in the first six months of 1919 vs 1918 and forecasts refiners will struggle to meet demand by October. Germany will not satisfy its own needs, opening a chance for western beet cultivation to expand and compete. Farmers must adopt scientific agriculture to maximize tonnage per acre and lower costs, aiding future price cycles. The American beet industry should be encouraged and protected.
Albert N Tallestrup announces a pupils recital from his summer class to be held at Relief Society hall August 23 and Center field August 24. Next term starts September 8.
Salina lines up an all male squad to challenge Gunnison Cyclones at the local diamond next Sunday afternoon. A big crowd from Richfield, Manti, Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant and Moroni is expected as Gunnison seeks to extend a strong season streak. Salina, bolstered by new players and rumors of a noted pitcher, aims to upset the higher ranked Cyclones in a lively Valley clash.
County seat ball players met the Cyclones on the Gunnison diamond last Sunday and suffered a humiliating defeat. Mantl claimed five runs to Gunnison's about 25 as the Cyclones outclassed them in every facet and only fatigue on the bases kept Mantl from scoring more.
John Peterson, contractor, has begun construction of a modern 16 by 30 foot schoolhouse for the Westview district. The project aims for readiness for the fall opening. Peterson is also building a two room bungalow for Joseph Christensen in the town’s south part.
The Birthday Club in Gunnison held two social events last week. Mrs. Daunt Sanders hosted Thursday with four tables of 100. first prize went to Mrs. J. M. Knighton and second to Mrs. C. N. Jensen. Saturday afternoon Mrs. Purier hosted a pleasant gathering. prizes in the 500 contest went to Mrs. Daunt Sanders and Mrs. H. A. Kearns. Gentle refreshments were served at both events.
The secretary of commerce named George Romney Jr of Smithfield for the first district and Austin P Miller of Salt Lake City for the second district as supervisors of the 1920 census. The 1910 aggregate population for the two districts was 73,351, with a likely rise after the 1920 census. First district counties include Box Elder Cache Carbon Daggett Davis Duchesne Emery Garfield Grand Kane Morgan Plane Righ San Juan Sanpete Sevier Summit Uintah Wasatch Wayne Weber. Second district counties are Beaver Iron Juab Millard Salt Lake Tooele Utah and Washington.
Mr and Mrs R H Gardner and their children from Levan were guests of Mrs C E Newman in the early days of the week.

William Bardsley, a well known townsman, was host of honor at a forty year anniversary party at his home last Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Bardsley gave the event, attended by about thirty guests, mostly immediate relatives. The afternoon featured games and music, a delicious dinner, and decorations of sweet peas. Out of town guests included Mrs. E. B. Peebles Collingston, Mrs. Frances Tate Charleston, Mr. and Mrs. Dr. L. Brundige and Miss Violate Bardsley Salt Lake, and Miss Dephing Broadhead Nephi.
