Bumpy oil road blamed for Wednesday morning crash
Deep furrows on the oiled highway near Hardscrabble caused Christian Nielson and his wife to lose control of a Pontiac at 7 30. They escaped serious injury though the car was damaged and wheel broken. Wrecked vehicle was taken to Redmond for repairs as state road crews promised soon repairs between Axtell and Gunnison.

Utah's illiteracy rate falls to 4 640 with 1.2 percent of residents over ten unable to read or write. The decline leaves Utah ranked eighth among 48 states and DC for least illiteracy, though native white illiterates rise from 925 to 952. Salt Lake County has 1,124 illiterates. Jensen Murder Yet a Mystery
Following the murder of Carl Jensen a year old sheepherder whose body was found along a south Clarion canal on July 21 officers chase theories but no solid clue has emerged. The three sons and Jensen’s wife were questioned with no usable alibis and the distinctive hat found miles north helps little as evidence and tracks vanish amid scattered sheep complicating the investigation. The case remains an unsolved mystery.

Peter McLaren the world champion woodchopper entertained about 300 spectators at the Chas. Rasmussen Furniture Co. store in Gunnison. He sliced an 18 inch log in 1 55, using a Plumb axe, and offered to cut the log in two in two thirds the time of rivals Bert Behunin and Peter Scow. He demonstrated throwing axes at 42 feet and matched several feats before crowds that included men women and children.
