The 16th Indiana Regiment in the Civil War

The Rushville Republican recalls the 16th Indiana Regiment a famed unit in the Civil War. It left Richmond on July 23 1861 for one year and was first to march through Baltimore after the 9th Massachusetts was fired upon. Commanders included Col P A Hackleman and Lieut Col Lucas. The unit served in fifteen engagements, with three officers and 227 men dying from disease and combat.

Over 200 members attended including Miss Rose Staley Ripley County. The convention elected officers and delegates and discussed postal and road topics. The county fair at Franklin posted a deficit of 900 dollars.
