The Night Fire Buffalo Painting in Japanese Art
A famous Japanese painting in Washington from the Japanese legation shows a hidden nocturnal luminous water buffalo painted with phosphorescent pigment from mollusks. The glow appears only at night, while daylight reveals only a plain landscape. The secret pigment died with the artist, and priests claim the buffalo hides in the shade by day and comes out at night.
