A Cannon salute marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first Civil War land battle at Philippi West Virginia. Delegates S H Stewart and Dr G W H Kemper represent Decatur County units Co B and Co F with Captain James Morgan and Lieutenant Ben Ricketts. The Union force numbered about 2 500 against about half that for the Confederates. James E Hanger lost a leg. twenty prisoners and many guns and horses were captured. Survivors Talbott Wallace Ricketts Conover Leggitt Israel Wright Alyea and Kemper recalled the old fight as speeches opened by Judge A G Dayton and responses by Kemper.

More than 600 Masons attended the ninetieth annual Grand Lodge session in Indianapolis. Grand Master Ridley delivered the morning address and disclosed that 1911 membership set a record with 57,499 total members, a net gain of 2,789. Prather reported a May 15 treasury of 33,024.31 and yearly receipts of 20,990.60. Widows and Orphans fund receipts totaled 13,343.25. New officers elected: Grand Master Williams H. Schntz, Deputy Gilmer F. Gay, Senior Grand Warden Martin A. Morrison, Grand Treasurer Frank E. Gavin, Grand Secretary Calvin W. Prather.
