The U S Department of Labor reports 3 473 466 fewer workers in industry than a year ago based on a nationwide survey. Some believe the figure undercounts unemployed as it excludes agricultural and other areas. The 36.9 percent drop reflects consensus from state and local agencies and employer groups.
Nights Templar Commandery No 5 installed officers in Patterson block east side of the square. Formed a year ago with 37 members, ending the year at 81. J H Christian Jr, honored retiring Eminent Commander, presided as acting senior official. Officers listed include Hal Kitchin, Roy Rutherford, Locke Braken, Robert Pierce, John Barbe, Sherman Brown, W Woodfill, Ira Rigby, John Barbe as recorder, Clyde Blackard, F S Chapman, James Trester, and James Trester as sentinel. Work in the Temple degree scheduled for next Monday night.
Rushville Oddfellows defeated the Legion team in a one sided contest last night. The score read a wide margin as Rushville overwhelmed the visitors. Controversy arose involving a Rushville referee and Greensburg players during the game. A sizable crowd traveled by car to attend the match, and the battle began shortly after eight with Palock officiating and Russell Kirkpatrick of Rushville refereeing.
A broken engine at the electric plant cut power from about four to six, delaying the Daily News edition and deliveries. Carriers resumed full service once lights returned, with subscribers receiving papers late but finally completed. Phone inquiries surged, reflecting the newspaper’s popularity.
The Associated Press notes only one third of thirty six solicitors in Washington township report, yet outlook for reaching the top is bright. Reporters say solicitors saw generous responses and rumors suggest broad county support though none from other townships have been received.
The Greensburg High School Literary Society met at the Y M C A parlors with about seventy attendees including many faculty. Eleanor Miller sang with Margaret Dowden. ten girls staged a two act play The Peabody Pew, with listed participants. The program ended with a folk piece by sixteen girls and boys will lead next week.
Indianapolis Jan 26 The state plans to ask the Shelby county grand jury to investigate the deer slaying case. Four persons pleaded guilty to unlawfully pursuing and shooting the deer and paid fines totaling 65 dollars. The conservation department seeks to identify all participants and clear up mystery about who was actually involved.
The Bible school auditorium was crowded as church members friends and city pastors welcomed Rev. Harry F. Lett and his family. Welcome talks stressed unity and cooperation while Lett expressed gratitude and a sense of responsibility in his Greensburg posting as a new pastor and citizen.
Shelbyville high school basketball hosts Greensburg tonight as the Jackets seek their twentieth straight win. Greensburg brings a strong squad hoping to end the streak, with a chartered special bus to bring fans and about 450 tickets distributed between the high school uptown store and Rapp Brothers.
John Linke of Indianapolis will address the Grammer community meeting next Saturday night at 7 30 in the United Brethren church. He will speak on general community topics and discuss forming a community building association. Other talks will be given by prominent local citizens.
A. P. Powell and Sons, Ford tractor distributors, were notified of a $165 price drop effective immediately. The reduction makes Fordson tractors affordable for farmers, costing little more than a good team and offering greater work capacity during a time of high demand. The new price is expected to boost sales soon.
Howard Williams and Noel Anderson of Letts are released from smallpox quarantine. A single other case remains in Letts, Allen Beagles, reported mild in illness.
Horace Farmers Co operative Company held its annual meeting in Horace to review 1920 business, reporting profit for all. Directors re elected were J C Thornburg Ira Moore John E and Earl Robbins. New directors elected Ernest McGee Charles Sasser and P E Bundy. E A Gibson runs the Horace supply store and office.
Mrs Pete Goins related a letter from her daughter Mrs Chal mers Coppock formerly Miss Katie Soins describing seeing Mr Erdmann, now in Mercedes Texas. The letter recalls a foot-bridge canal fish tale with a three pound catch and a dentist visit followed by tourism notes about a 175 mile trip and praise for local scenery.
A large crowd attended the Tekekah Lodge session last night. Three persons were initiated: Mr and Mrs Ernest Scripture and Miss Helen Elliott. Two petitions were received. New members and district deputy G O Barnard spoke. Plans target 400 members in six months.
County Agent Ireland and M. E. Cole attended a Sand Creek township farmers meeting at Westport this afternoon. The gathering discussed the fertilizer situation and other vital local farming issues.
A spelling contest at Burney Saturday evening saw Mrs. DeHa Hanks, out of school for years, win the prize by spelling every word correctly and defeating all challengers.
According to US Geological Survey figures 258 600 wells are producing oil nationwide with Pennsylvania listing the most at 67 700 wells. Oklahoma, Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois and New York follow in order. average daily per well ranges from 0.3 barrels in Pennsylvania to 55 in Wyoming and Montana combined. Kentucky stands at 3.2 barrels per day.
A European Relief banquet report notes that Ira Miller was unintentionally left out as a speaker. Miller, a former U. S. Army lieutenant who served in France and Germany, gave a vivid account of life in that region.

Holton Independents of Ripley county basketball champions travel to Greensburg to face the Legion five at the Y M C A. Holton has been winning lately along the B and O S W railroad and seeks more wins. Joe Welch Post will present a stiff lineup, promising an extra good contest with a strong Holton team. Game slated for eight o’clock.
Late word from Frances Hunter of Bloomington, daughter of Mrs. L. B. Hunter, says she is slightly improved though still in danger. She has been bedbound since December 16 from an infection following a gathering in the head. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Chatten of Letts spent the day with Mrs. Martha Keith of Westport.
John Freeman five weeks old son of Mr and Mrs John Richards of West Washington Street died this morning at 5 30 of whooping cough. The parents four brothers and a sister survive. A short service will be held at the residence tomorrow at one o clock. Burial at Letts. Miss Goldie Howard was off duty at the Dalmbert store today due to sickness.
Partly cloudy conditions continue in Indiana with little temperature change. Forecasters expect no major shifts in temperatures through Thursday and light winds inland.
The Westport pastor Rev. Swartz says subscribers call the News a household necessity and confess they cannot do without it. He notes that nearly everyone in the area reads the paper daily and eagerly awaits each edition.
Two bandits entered the Marion Ohio county treasurer’s office at the courthouse, knocked Harry E. Forry unconscious with a revolver, and escaped with about $14,000 in cash. The vault held between $50,000 and $75,000, which the robbers did not reach.
Joe Welsh Post of the American Legion will stage a musical revue in the K P opera house on April 18 and 19. Frank Marlin chairs the committee with D A Batterton Ralph Schwabe Ross Reed and Barney Layton as members.
A new conveying and sterilizing machine is being installed at the Coca Cola bottling works on South Franklin Street. The plant, closed for winter, will reopen to the local trade on March 1 according to Manager William Layne.

Governor Hyde of Missouri will headline the Indiana Republican banquet at the Claypool hotel Riley room as the Indiana Editorial Association closes its two day session. Mrs Fosseen of Minnesota will speak, with about six hundred attending the previous winter event, while Edward Hancock chairs the association. Sessions start Thursday at the Severn Hotel with talks on running newspapers and the next summer meeting site under review for Madison Gary Evansville and South Bend.
Jasper Turner charged with obtaining money under false pretenses has been arrested in Indianapolis and is held in city prison pending official word. Police Officer James Grinstead will bring Turner back to face charges in city police court.
