Origin and rise of Decatur County teachers institutes
Jacob A. Dillman recalls the birth of county education institutes in Decatur County from 1856 to 1866. He describes initial rough schools, the formation of the Decatur Teachers Association, early meetings in Greensburg, and the 1860 institute under G. W. Hoss. The era culminates with statewide institutes in Greensburg Bloomington Lafayette and Valparaiso boosting reform and national attention.
