The column recalls Dr James O Byrene leaving Milford for Shelbyville after six years. It notes William Hillis death aged sixty, temperance lecturing by Henry Walker, Lyceum officers, local appointments, new businesses, a fair with eight hundred in value, and a Republican town ticket. Several court cases, marriages, church events, and a fire of civic notes fill the year.
William Rainey Bennett headlined a Greensburg lecture in the K of P theatre introducing C F Northern. He delivered two hours of rhetoric with six tenor songs as a curtain raiser and praised as one of Greensburg’s best speakers. He urged awakening the sleeping genius within every mind and offered a powerful moral through the Wolf Chase recital. The next speaker, Frank McClure Tracy, arrives February 28. the event is staged by the Christian church ladies and praised for its performance.
Mrs. George Conner, born 1836 in Noblesville, died recently at Noblesville. She was the last child of John and Jane Hillis Hazelrigg, early county settlers who moved from Bourbon County Kentucky in 1832. Survived by her husband and six children, she was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers. Funeral was held at the Noblesville home with mourners from the city attending.
William A. Stewart aged sixty nine died at his Rushville home Saturday at 3 15 am after a brief illness due to acute indigestion. Pioneer of Rush County born near Richland in 1841, he was married twice Eliza J Bryan in 1863 and Sarah E K Hood in 1870. Survived by wife and three children Nancy L Elmer B and Albert F with Albert the only one living. Funeral at his residence Monday at nine led by Rev W L Clark, burial in Springhill cemetery.
Mrs Steve Rogers hosted a surprise dinner Saturday for her mother Mrs Kate Henry who turned seventy three. Guests included Mrs Nancy Stockman Mrs Mary Harris of Indianapolis Mrs Will Mansfield Mrs Martha Rucker Mrs Mills Henry and Mrs Mary Braden. Mrs Henry received many handsome post cards and congratulations.
The Indiana Republican campaign begins with Decatur County meetings. About two hundred gathered at the G A R hall as County Chairman J P Thomson opened proceedings. Delegates and precinct committeemen were chosen for the district conventions and county wards with notable veterans Annis and Turner among the new blood, signaling harmony and a strong start to the campaign. Further township selections followed across Clinton Adams Clay Jackson Sandcreek Saltcreek Pugit Marion with committeemen and delegates named to districts and alternates chosen where needed.
John E. Osborn J. T. Meek George M. Thompson and John Livingston start a barrel hoop plant in Helena Arkansas by purchasing timberland and erecting a facility with a 60000 hoops per day capacity. About forty workers will be employed with Livingston in charge and Dale Welsh as secretary and treasurer. The venture follows a pivot from Greensburg due to timber shortages.
The Tourist Club met at the Bird home on East Washington with talks on Conservation of Natural Resources in the United States and forests in California. Led by L. D. Braden and Miss Sue Lambert, the program included piano solos and a discussion, concluding that national action should expand while state powers are curtailed.
The program for the last three days of the Farmers' Short Course Institute in this city shows morning sessions at 9 and afternoon at 1. From Thursday February 10, topics include corn and fat cattle judging, alfalfa culture, spraying, silage for beef cattle, landscape gardening, breeding cattle, horses, orchard management, and lectures by J. E. Wing, E. C Allen, and G. L. Roberts. Women domestic science and rural school agriculture tracks list judging fancy poultry, deep fat frying, buttermaking, round tables, home fruit growing, and education for country life with demonstrations by Miss McCheyne and others.
The club contends that state legislatures have shown limits in curbing trusts and railroads, and it is up to Congress to enact proper relief for the public.
Miss Beulah Hazelrigg has returned to her Mitchell home after a pleasant visit with Miss Florence Hazelrigg. She is the daughter of Alex Hazelrigg who is a cousin to the Hazelriggs here.
