Amma A. Scott of Elwood, once paralyzed from a neck injury while unloading hay near Muncie, traveled to Columbus to obtain a marriage license to wed Ada B. Webster of Hope. Scott, 45, has recovered enough to pursue matrimony after two prior marriages. The bride’s father is George W. Webster of Hope.
Miss Elizabeth Gloshen and Miss Stella Gloshen wed Carl Ralston and Virgil Henry in Kingston Thanksgiving. Rev. Scoular officiated as velvet attired brides celebrated with a buffet at Virgil Henry’s farm east of Milroy. A Friday reception at E. V. Ralston’s home honored the couples and guests.
Fourth Assistant Postmaster General DeGraw warns during the Christmas mail rush that writing messages on photographs, books, or within third and fourth class mail items is a violation of postal rules. He notes such inscriptions can shift the item to first class or letter rate and underscores vigilant postal inspections.
Bert Buell near Milroy reports fifty poults killed by a large dog that prowled during the early morning hours. Tracks led to Floyd Kennett’s house. Kennett denies his hound strayed. Case likely to go before the grand jury depending on local politics.
The eighth annual reunion of the Association of Survivors of the Battle of Stones River will meet in Kokomo Indiana on January 2 1908 with day exercises and a banquet that evening. Members must RSVP the number of plates and provide full service records and contact details for themselves spouses or daughters.
Olive Aerie of Eagles holds regular meeting electing Ike Martin as Worthy President Garfield Sherman as Worthy Vice President Charles Craig as Worthy Chaplain Charles Boyl as Inner Guard Charles Porter as Outer Guard Will Ehrhardt as Secretary William Wright as Treasurer Trustees named Jacob Bender Lou Marlow and Wesley Lanius Clyde Stagg becomes Past Worthy President.
The Pap Thomas Post No. 5 G A R held its annual officer election with O C Elder as Commander and Walter McElroy, Samuel Ridenour, H Myers, A S Creath, Monroe Marsh, W A Lawson, G W Hightower among others elected by acclamation. Representatives to the Department Encampment in Kokomo were Jasper Cobb, J W Taylor and M C Welsh with alternates listed. Trustees are D C Elder, M Marsh and B F McCoy. The pension bill by Congressman Adair was unanimously endorsed. New officers to be mustered in January 3. The commander is a Seventh Indiana veteran. Clocks advertised by Pun H Spohn.
Petey Miner, famed local product from St. Paul Greensburg and Shelbyville clubs, excelled in the Central League with Terre Haute last season. He appeared in 34 games, ranking among the top pitchers by appearances, and posted 10 putouts and 115 assists, the latter the most by any pitcher. He had 10 errors and a season fielding percentage of .926.
William Carter, who ran a blind tiger here, faced Judge Hacker and pleaded guilty to selling liquor without a license. He was fined and costs totaling $25 and sent to pay $1 per day if unable to settle, with expenses ultimately borne by the taxpayers.
The Woman's Relief Corps No. 113 elected officers for 1908 led by President Mrs Will L White and Senior Vice President Mrs Rebecca Sherman. Other officers include Junior VP Mrs Ellen Hightower Treasurer Mrs Eliza J Crisler Chaplain Mrs Mary Crume Conductor Mrs Thomas Havens Guard Mrs H B Lockwood with delegates Mrs Cora Davis and Mrs C I Ainsworth and alternates Mrs A H Champion and Mrs Louisa Byers.
Sam Covert and Ed M. Hamilton located a pocket gas seam about 250 feet deep while drilling three miles east of town. The heavy pressure forced them to pack the well and halt operations until pressure subsides. The team expects a productive gas well once safe.
