Coroner Gullefer’s verdict finds John Higgins, lever man at the switch tower, died by an accidental gunshot at the South East Street bridge after a lover’s quarrel with Miss Cleve Davis. The 19 year old rail worker’s funeral was held at his parents’ home with burial in South Park cemetery.

Coroner T B Gullefer of Decatur County Greensburg finds John Higgins died from careless handling of a revolver he believed unloaded. The revolver was loaded and Higgins’ death is deemed a consequence of his own recklessness, May 5 1901.
S. M. Burney known as Uncle Milton died at his Burney home May 8 1901 aged 84 years 9 months 27 days. Born in North Carolina he moved to Indiana at 16 with his parents and farmed near Burney. He married Sarah Pumphrey at 21 and had nine children eight living seven attended his funeral at M E church with burial in Milford cemetery. A devout M E member noted for generosity.
