Greene Community Schools report 664 students for the 1973-74 year with 330 in kindergarten through sixth grade and 334 in seventh through twelfth grade. Junior high and high school enrollment remains near last year while elementary enrollment drops about 20 due to a large previous sixth grade class of 63 and a smaller incoming kindergarten class of 41.
St Marys Catholic Church hosts an eight day Christian Renewal Mission from Sept 16 to 23 led by Father Caspar Stollenwerk OFM Capuchin from St Bonaventure Monastery Detroit. Services include daily 7 30 pm masses and evening programs with a closing service on Sept 23. Father Stollenwerk urges all Christians to attend for soul searching and renewal.
The Woman's Club of Greene opens its club year with a Tuesday morning breakfast on Sept 18 at 9 15 at the Corner House. Guest speaker is Graydon Hunk Anderson, chair of the Iowa Air Quality Control Commission. President Arvid Lindell and officers lead the social committee and announce activities for the year.
The notice invites to join the organization and attend events. Reservations should be made by calling Mrs. Lindell or Mrs. Hawker. Members of the calling committee will contact Woman's Club members.
The Butler Co Pork Producers announce a new novice class at the annual fall market hog show in Greene. The event, at the Bath Buying Station, kicks off with weigh ins at 8:30 am and judging at 10 am on Saturday September 15. Hogs are sorted by weight into light heavy and novice classes, each awarded ribbons.
The funeral for Scott G. Pyatt 19 was at First Presbyterian Church Greene with Rev. Howard Dukelow officiating. Born August 19, 1954, he attended Greene Community School, graduating 1972. He died September 7 while employed by a Charles City bridge painting firm in South Dakota. Survivors include his parents, siblings, and grandparents. A noon lunch followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.
The menu lists daily meals from September 13 to September 28 featuring items like lasagna scalloped potatoes fish sticks meat loaf turkey casserole tuna and noodles tortilla Spanish rice casserole chicken and fish sandwiches. Each day includes sides such as vegetables fruit juice milk and desserts.
Ten participants place, with a Grand and Reserve Champion to be chosen overall. Hogs enter a carcass contest judged by Bath Packing Company of Waterloo. Cash prizes range from 1500 dollars for first to 2 dollars for fifth. A Novice class was created to involve local hog producers with entry fees of 100 dollars per head. Each exhibitor may enter up to two hogs, weighed and shown in weight classes of up to 25 entries. A follow up meeting will review carcass results.
Nomination papers are available at City Hall for the mayor and five council seats in the November election. Papers must be filed with the City Clerk by 5 pm on Thursday September 27 after securing 10 signatures. Absentee ballots may be requested from the Butler County Auditors Office in Allison.
Missionaries from four foreign countries and four home mission areas will take part in the 30th annual Missionary Conference at Calvary Baptist Church from September 16 to 23. Eight Northeast Iowa Regular Baptist Churches join the sessions with nightly talks by Beth Zinke, Donald Dove, Charles Hocking, Gordon Katson, Paul Muzzey, John Yuskis, William Brown, and Gene Bryant. Junior and Cadette Scouts hold initial meetings September 18 and 19 at the Community Center. senior Scouts will announce times later.
Greene residents kickoff a new Girl Scout year with Brownie leaders named Mrs. Albert Tinderholt Mrs. Bob Barth Mrs. Gary Krull and Mrs. Fred Hawker. Second grade girls and their mothers plus interested third graders are invited to the Elementary School meeting on Tuesday Sept 18 at 3 30 PM to learn about Brownie activities.
Schrage was re elected to the Allison-Bristow school board and James Shepard won the second seat. George H Busch was defeated. The race reflected district controversy over firing of administrators. Voters turned out in force with 1082 ballots cast as the Greene unopposed race drew 70 ballots.
Greene Ramblers were shut out 29-0 by Allison-Bristow in the opener. Coach Larry Helmers blamed inexperience and turnovers as key factors, noting Allison’s returning backfield while Greene’s backs had limited varsity experience. Leading Greene players included Brian Frevert, 37 rushing yards, and John Van Essen, 23 passing yards.
Greene Ramblerettes finish 10 wins 6 losses and place four players on the All Conference team with Janet Schafer Pam Miller Deb McGee first team and Julie Johnson honorable mention. Team details include Schafer hitting .403 with 25 hits and 28 RBIs, Miller captaining and stealing 31 bases, and Johnson leading in doubles with seven.
Navy Airman Recruit Dennis M. Marzen son of Mr and Mrs Gerald Marzen of Marble Rock Iowa graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center San Diego He is a 1973 Rockford Senior High School graduate and is to report to Aviation Storekeeper A School in Memphis Tennessee
Auction notices set for Friday evening September 14 with Olive Reinhart, Saturday September 15 with Mrs John Gersema at 12 30 p m, and Saturday September 22 a Commission Sale at the Franklin Schucknecht residence starting noon.
