Miss Gertrude Morse currently on furlough from French Equatorial Africa will be guest speaker at Calvary Baptist Church next Sunday evening at 7 and 8 oclock. Her illustrated lecture uses colored slides and she serves with Baptist Mid Missions. Morse resides in Tonia Iowa.
Mr and Mrs Leo Hargarty of Waterloo displayed colored photos of their Europe trip at the parental Bert Hargarty home Saturday. The couple visited relatives in Con dalkin Ireland and toured London Lisbon Rome Geneva Paris Lourdes Munich Frankfort Weisbaden Cologne Dusseldorf Muenster Hilversum and traveled by jet on return. Attendees included Mrs Lowell Maxson Anne and Elizabeth Hagarty the Keith Murphy family and Richard Hagarty.
An organizational meeting to form a County Stamp Club was held in City Hall Allison with 25 attendees. Officers elected include President Gordon Heath and Vice President Vern Gard. secretary Ruth Miller. treasurer Wayne Rohlwing. Directors are Norman Satory, Peter H Matisheck, and C E Burroughs. The next meeting is Saturday December 12 at 7 30 p m in Allison. Members and stamp dealers John Cooper assisted. towns represented Greene Clarksville Rockford Charles City and Allison. Refreshments served. Greene attendees named.
Union Thanksgiving services will be held Wednesday evening November 24 at 7 30 p m. with participation by the Methodist Church the Church of the Brethren and the Presbyterian Churches Rev Clavion Becker will deliver the message and special music will be provided by the Presbyterian Choir Rev James Parks and Rev Fred Buller will take part in the service
Field work in the 1959 Census of Agriculture began locally as census takers started visiting every farm in the area. Percy R. Millara announced the effort with takers Robert Fischer Bennedette township Margaret Needham and Mildred Young serving Coldwater Bennedette and Dayton townships respectively. Census forms were mailed to operators and field workers will assist in completing reports while protecting confidentiality under federal law.
New residents Mr and Mrs Donald McGee of Shell Rock welcomed Kenneth Leroy a 9 pound 3 ounce son born Friday November 20 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. Dean Waters Cedar Falls welcomed Cynthia Marie a 7 pound 14 ounce daughter born Friday November 20 at Satori Hospital Cedar Falls. Ronald Drake and wife welcomed Janeane Ann a 7 pound 2 ounce daughter born Friday November 13 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City.
The Greene Community School and St. Mary's Academy will close for Thanksgiving vacation on Thursday and Friday. Dismissals occur Wednesday as usual and classes resume Monday morning. Buses will depart Greene Community School at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Miss Mary Frascht 79 died of carcinoma at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City Thanksgiving week after three weeks as a patient. Born March 7 1880 near Roseville she lived in Greene since 1903. Survived by brother Chris and sister Sister Mary Magdalene plus nephews and nieces. Charter member of Catholic Daughters of America. Funeral at St Marys Church 1:30 p.m. Saturday Rev P J Boyle officiating burial in St Marys Cemetery Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in charge.
All Legion and VFW members are urged to attend a meeting at the Veterans Club on Tuesday December 1 at 730 p m. The gathering aims to discuss upcoming events and community service efforts and to strengthen local veteran networks.
The 20th Annual Tax School of The Iowa State Bar Association will be held in Des Moines December 3, 4 and 5, 1959. John H. Raife of Des Moines chairs the taxation committee. about 1,000 Iowa attorneys are expected. Greene attendees include John Van Eschen, James H. Graven, and Larry Ashlock, judge Henry Graven's law clerk. Topics cover Federal and Iowa income tax returns, moneys and credits tax, Iowa inheritance tax and related matters.
Enthusiasm runs high as 44 students enroll in the Beginners Band under Ray Holtz. Plans include a two month trial rental and a final parent concert to showcase progress with aims to reach Cadet and Senior bands. Contact the school for information.
The Parent-Teachers Association will meet in the high school gymnasium next Wednesday evening December 2. A program will be given by the rural schools and a panel discussion will be held. The theme is To Strengthen Moral and Spiritual Values.
Greene Community High School plans a quarter hour radio program on KCHA Charles City on Saturday December 12 at 10 30 am. The 28th annual High School Radio Speaking Program is sponsored by the Butler County Tuberculosis Association and the Town Tuberculosis and Health Association. Jane Voigts will discuss Tuberculin Test The Major Key Paul Ruzicka presents The UW In Health Education. Sally Bartels presents Christmas Seals Help Protect The Family Circle.
Thousands of letters carrying Christmas Seals were sent to Butler County residents as the annual tuberculosis fund drive began. The Butler County Tuberculosis and Health Association organizes the effort with chairmen for towns and townships urging many purchases. The program funds tuberculin testing in schools, chest X rays, and research support, with local chairmen named.
Ambrose Stanton left Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City and returned home on Sunday after treatment. Mrs Al Redenbeck also returned home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City last Saturday following surgery.
The Buller County Chapter of the American Cancer Society held its annual meeting on November 18 at Hotel Allison in Allison. New officers named for 1960 include Mrs. Dave Cot Aplington chapter president, Mrs. Vernon Larson and Mr. Dave Harken of Aplington as treasurer. Directors elected for a three term are Bill Brandenburg, Mrs. Sabill Kroma, Mrs. Herman Stubbe, and Mrs. Vernon Larsen.
Mrs Ira Ingraham was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Tuesday November 10 after a fall at home fractured her left hip. She underwent surgery and a pin was placed in the injured member.
Glenn Shorty Hall age 52 of Treer died unexpectedly Monday afternoon of a heart attack. He was a brother of Mrs. John Scott and a former Treer resident. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 2:00 PM at a Treer funeral home with burial in Buckingham Cemetery.
The American Legion Auxiliary asks for Butter-Nut Coffee strips and jar labels to fund Christmas gifts for orphans and disabled veterans’ children. Containers will be at Dralles, Cliff's Food Market, B. & W. Fine Food Store, and Morey’s West Side Grocery. Mrs. Howard Raisty oversees the drive and accepts items until December 15.
Two youths Gerald Luppen 17 Alden and Alfred Rouz J Jr 15 Hampton were apprehended Sunday November 22 with cooperation from Hardin Franklin and Butler County sheriffs. They allegedly admitted breaking into five sites including Aplington Elevator Dumont Elevator Faulkner Elevator Hansel Elevator and Phillips 66 Station Geneva stealing $15 to $17 in change. They were released to their parents’ custody pending a juvenile court hearing.
The Adult Farmer Class met Monday evening with Mr Wayne Ford of the Ralston Purina Company presenting Integration and Contract Farming. Objections to integration were discussed along with practices to compete with vertical integration. The next class is set for Monday November 32 at 8 00 pm with a film on crop drying and a session on New Corn Harvesting and Spring Equipment.
Greene Rambieretes split a doubleheader with Aplington to open the 49 60 cage season. The reserves won 34 19 while the varsity lost 50 32 as Greene relied on Mary Roose and Marge Evers for scoring and defense.
Butler County October savings bonds totaled 62,662 leaving 58,590 to reach the 1959 quota with two months remaining. First ten months reached 961,420 or 94 percent of 1,020,010 while Iowa totals rose to 9,978,298, a six month peak and car purchases hit 119,606,338 for 77 percent of the annual goal. John McWhirter of Allison, volunteer chairman, reported the county figures and Iowa trends.

Sara Jane Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Green, earned a violin seat in the All-State Orchestra after October 24 try-outs at Charles City. She will travel to Des Moines Thursday, rehearse Friday and Saturday at the Savory Hotel Ballroom, and perform Saturday at 6 o'clock in the ARNT Theatre. Tickets may be reserved by sending a check to KRNT Theatre, Des Moines.
