Greene High speech students set new school record
Greene High School speech students set a district record with 14 division one ratings at the District Individual Speech Contest in St. Ansgar on March 1, surpassing last year’s mark by two and leading all schools. Winners include Rhonda Helm, Deb Barnhart, Linda Rutz in poetry, Joanne Senne, Heide Groff in prose, Kevin Jewell, Dallas Brinkman, Joe Viers in after dinner speaking, Becky Wust, Bev Brinkman in story telling, Deb Barnhart in dramatic acting, Mary O'Brien in original oratory, Cindy Weinberg in oratorical declamation, and Becky West in improvisational storytelling. several others earned division two. The team, under Speech and Drama Director Wayne O'Brien, credits strong underclassman participation and enthusiasm as they prepare for the state contest in Waterloo on March 22.

The Woman's Club of Greene will entertain the 60-Plus Club on Tuesday March 18 at 149 p.m. in the 60-Plus building. Greene High School dramatists plus vocal and instrumental musicians will perform. Pauline Tindall will give the Federation Flash. Social Committee members are Lola Worley Beth Drakle and Thelma Barth.

Mather Dayton Reca Mather Obituary Funeral Held
Funeral services for Mrs. Dayton Reca Mather 79 were held Saturday, March 8, at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Rev. M. M. Frevert officiating. Born November 18, 1895 in Zearing Story County Iowa to Adolph and Sophia Otto she died March 5 in Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City after a brief illness. She married Joy Fairchild in 1919 and later Dayton Mather in 1965. she resided near Greene after his 1970 death. Survivors include four brothers and a sister. Interment Greenwood Cemetery Cedar Falls. Reid's Funeral Chapel Greene led arrangements.

Greene's Jazz Show Postponed to March 19 at Greene High
Greene's 3rd annual Jazz Show, postponed from last week's district boys game, will be held March 19 at 8 p.m. in the Greene High School old gym. Duke Ellington works the first half with a set list and trombonist John Groethe headlines the second half along with 70s hits. Groethe, Drake University graduate, has played with multiple area orchestras and bands and leads The Faculty. Tickets cost 2 reserved, 1.50 general, 1 student, available from jazz band members or at the door.

The Greene Community High School Jazz Band 1 of 20 won first place at the Nashua Jazz Festival, with Randy Smith named outstanding trombone player and Robb Holtz as outstanding trumpet player. Doug Ebling earned a NAJE certificate for tenor saxophone. Judges included Jim Coffin and Dennis Smith.
