B and W Fine Foods of Hampton has purchased Opperman's Market in Allison and will assume possession on March 1. The acquisition expands B and W to four stores across Greene Hampton Sheffield and Allison. Opperman’s Market was founded over fifty years ago by David Opperman and remained in the family.
Bradley Foster ten month old son of Mr and Mrs Delmar Foster burned on the stomach when a pot of hot coffee is tipped Sunday. He was treated at a local doctor's office and recuperating at home with his parents.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club will hold its annual meeting at City Hall on Thursday February 11 at 8 00 o clock. Officers will be elected and other business will be conducted.
The Greene Rendering Company has been sold to Eugene, Robert, Thomas and Paul Frith of Dubuque Town. The new owners took over on Monday February 15. The Frith brothers also own the E. E. Frith Company in Dubuque, active in rendering since 1859. They seek a Greene residence for a family member to live in full time.
The Junior High manpiers and Ramblerettes defeated Nora Springs teams yesterday afternoon with scores of 37 to 27 and 23 to 22. Rattler led locals with 15 points, Gratias had 13 for Nora Springs, Foster led the Ramblerettes with 18, and Benhart topped Nora Springs with 11.
About 115 students from seven schools in four counties competed in the Preliminary Speech Contest sponsored by the Iowa High School Speech Association. Charles City High led Division I ratings with 11, Riceville 10, Immaculate Conception Charles City 8, Osage 8, Waverly 7, Greene 4, Shell Rock 1. Division I ratings were earned by Charles City High, Waverly, and Greene in their one act plays with multiple winners across dramatic and humorous declamation, oratorical, interpretive reading, original oratory, radio speaking, extemporaneous speaking, and public address, featuring students from Riceville, Osage, Waverly, Charles City I. C., Greene, and Shell Rock. Greene students in the one act play Balcony Scene included Bruce Mead, Clare Grendler, Sally Bartels, Maureen Allison, Jerry Backer, Dennis Wunsch, Linda Jackson, and Donna Reed.
The Greene Fire Department was called out twice in the past week to battle a South Second Street house fire and a Dean Worhs farm barn blaze. A clothes closet fire spread to two rooms, destroying contents and smoke-damaging the house, which is insured and renovation underway. The Saturday barn fire at Worhs farm near Greene destroyed the barn and hay, with no livestock loss, but the structures were insured.
Greene resident Darrell Davis placed third in the 1959 Texaco Master Marketers Award Sales program covering six states Iowa Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota Wisconsin and Michigan. Davis won several merchandise prizes and has entered the 1960 Sales Campaign.
Butler County Cattle Feeders Banquet will feature Robert C. Debaca Extension Animal Husbandman from Iowa State University discussing the outlook, feed developments, wet corn use, and beef breeding highlights. The annual event begins at 6 45 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Auditorium with tickets from local Greene area coordinators.
Greene Public Library proposes extending free library service to residents of Bennedette Coldwater Dayton Pleasant Grove Union and Scott townships within the Greene Community School District. The plan lists per township costs based on sections and reserves the right to adjust if outside-district use rises. The library houses about 9000 books and 500 magazines with a 19162 annual circulation and emphasizes equitable access and cooperation with the local schools.

Majewski announces sale of the Standard Station to Lyle O'Brien who took possession on Monday February 1. Majewski operated the station for twelve years and expanded it last year with a rear addition. O'Brien, formerly with Greene Motor Company, has renamed it O'Brien Standard Service.

Larry Kramer age 20 son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Kramer of rural route Greene took possession of Hamiltons Furniture Store on Monday. He graduated Greene High School in 1958 and completed an eighteen month accounting course last November at Hamiltons Business College in Mason City. Paul Hamilton has been associated in the furniture business in Greene for seven and a half years and will continue to operate Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in Greene.
Marion Alvee Stewart of Greene received a $10 fine and $4 costs for illegal parking in front of the fire station. Vernon Carr of Nashua was fined $15 with $4 costs for speeding. Lerry Ray Francis of Reinbeck faced a stop sign violation with a $10 fine and $4 costs or 4 days in Butler County Jail. Francis elected jail.
Robert Shaw leads the Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra in Bach's B Minor Mass on February 15 at Knights Gym Waverly. The 11th cross country tour marks the work’s first Americas tour since Bach’s 1788 composition, with Shaw rising as a major figure in American music.
Francis Dean Reynolds age 18 of Parkersburg pleaded guilty to larceny in the daytime before Judge Wild on Saturday January 30 and was sentenced to five years at Anamosa with the sentence suspended. He was paroled to the State Board of Parole after arrest by Sheriff Boomgarden on December 17, 1959 for taking a transistor radio from Smitty's Electric Shop in Parkersburg.

In the Greene Women’s City Bowling tournament completed Sunday, Pearletta McRoberts won the singles title while Lillian Salt and Marie Ackley captured the doubles crown with 1075. Dorothy Fischer topped the all events. Team Harrisons sponsored trophies and cash prizes were awarded to all first place winners. about a quarter of entrants received cash prizes.
Hazel D. McCray of Cedar Rapids died January 28 after a long illness. Survived by a niece and nephew in Greene and a foster sister. Services at Turner Chapel Cedar Rapids conducted by Rev. J Richard Wagner. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. G F Butler. out of town mourners from Conrad Allison Charles City attended.
Shell Rock posted 39 points to 30 for the Ramblerettes in the Butler County girls basketball semi final last Thursday. Mary and Susan Roose anchored Ramblerettes defense while Shell Rock led 23 to 13 at halftime and 32 to 18 after three quarters before winning 39 to 30.
The Freshman class of Greene Community School sponsors a Valentine party on Saturday from 7 30 to 11 00 PM in the school cafeteria. All high school students are invited to attend.
Second Lieutenant Curtis D. Kyhl left Saturday for Fort Belvoir Virginia to report for duty with the Army Corps of Engineers. Kyhl, a November graduate of Iowa State University with a mechanical engineering degree, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Kyhl of Parkersburg. His wife, the former Nancy Squires, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Squires of Greene, will join him later with their infant son Cary.
Mrs Howard Raisty underwent surgery on Monday at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Mrs Hireld Tack had surgery on Thursday at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Albert Steere underwent surgery on Tuesday January 26 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Mrs Clarence Kretzschmar underwent surgery last Saturday at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
