Greene eighth graders beat Rudd 45 to 17 for their third straight win while freshmen fell 32 to 24 on Tuesday January 14. Scorers include Curtis 16 Johnson 12 Astor 7 Rattler 6 Neumeyer 4. freshman Senne led Greene with 22 of 24.
Nashua edged Plainfield 62 to 59 to win the Greene tournament. Greene finished third with 50 points and Dike 26. Winners include 95-Groen, 103-Noel, 112-Lore, 120-Carpenter, 127-Legel, 133-Hassman, 138-Utterback, 145-L. Wihlm, 154-Brown, 165-Poppen, and Hwt-Arends among others. Greene also faced St Ansgar 24-18 last week and plans a meet at Plainfield this Saturday with varsity at 7:00 and travel to Ackley next Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs Loren Jacobson of Milwaukee Wisconsin announce the birth of a son on Wednesday January 15. The baby weighs 5 pounds 6 ounces and has been named Steven Joseph.
John C. Koester aged 2 son of Mr and Mrs Sterling Koester of Austin Texas drowned Tuesday in a neighbor’s pool while playing with another child. Born September 14 1961 in Austin he is survived by parents two sisters Janet 15 Ellen 11 one brother Andrew 7 and grandparents Mr and Mrs Ernest J Koester of Shell Rock. Funeral services set for Thursday in Austin.
The 26th anniversary campaign will launch this week with twelve community leaders heading efforts in Butler County. In Greene area chairman is Mrs. Howard Raisty. Mailers go out this week and events run through January with residents urged to return mailers promptly to support polio birth defects and arthritis causes nationwide.
Charles H. Merfeld, son of Greene residents, appointed manager of United Telephone Company of Iowa exchanges in Grundy Center Wellsburg and Aplington. He succeeds Bob Sprague, reassigned to Newton as area manager. Merfeld began with United in Greene in 1946 and has worked with Grundy Center since March 1954.
The February 1964 term of the District Court of Butler County will convene February 13, with Hon. C. H. Wild of Waverly presiding. Grand and petit jurors are announced by Clerk Hugh L. Mosh er. Grand jurors appear February 14 at 10 a m. petit jurors February 17 at 10 a m. Names listed by township.
John Van Eschen a Greene County attorney is selected to represent the Junior Bar Section of The Iowa State Bar Association in Butler County. David L. Hammer of Dubuque president of the Junior Bar Section appoints him to the county post to assist committee chairmen and the senior bar in county level activities.
Victor Woodley of Allison announces candidacy for Republican nomination to Butler County Treasurer in the June primary. He has served as deputy treasurer for two and a half years and is married to Esther Schipper with one daughter.
The Butler County Conservation Board met January 7 at the county courthouse. Calvin Kelly was appointed for a five year term, Herman Faber elected Chairman and Clarence Ostercamp Secretary for 1964. Members are Faber Parkersburg, Ostercamp Parkersburg, Schuldt Snell Rock, Harris Clarksville, Kelly Greene. Plans focus on five parks: Considine Lake near Dumont, Camp Comfort near Clarksville and Greene, Shell Rock Area west of Shell Rock, Greene Area, Beaver Meadows north of Parkersburg. Projects include extending picnic facilities, playgrounds, and camping facilities. gratitude was extended to county residents for support.
The January theme for the Boy Scouts of America is Family Alert, an emergency preparedness program developed with the Office of Civil Defense. It aims to train families to act cohesively in disasters, turning households into ready teams to protect themselves and support the community and nation.
Royal Hardman reports the death of his sister Mrs Thelma Clifton 62 of Hemet California from a heart attack Sunday noon. The Cliftons lived in California 25 years she is survived by husband sister Mrs John Blenken Vista California a sister in law Mrs Aaron Hardman Greene and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services pending in Vista with cremation planned and interment later at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene.
Data from a Butler County building survey last October led the Army Corps of Engineers to classify the Greene High School and Dumont High School cafeterias as potential public fallout shelters against nuclear radiation. Federal fallout supplies for Greene’s Interstate Power Plant shelter are in transit and due this week.

LeRoy Edward Butler of Waterloo faced charges for night speeding. He was fined $9.00 and $4.60 in costs, with the case noted in the local court records.
Keith Edward Shapley, 42, Greene, was arrested January 1 in Greene by Sheriff Pete E. Boomgarden on a charge of larceny. In Allison, Judge Deam Wiegmann sentenced Shapley to thirty days in the county jail after he pled guilty to taking a tool box from Leo Gabe's truck parked on Greene streets the night of January 14.
Greene Fire Department responded to a Sunday 10:45 p.m. alarm at the Heery Estate Farm east of Greene where a small building burned completely. Over $500 worth of tools were lost, with the damage covered by insurance.
Richard L. Ewald of Marble Rock has been promoted to airman third class in the United States Air Force. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Claude M Ewald and is training at the Keesler Technical Training Center in Mississippi. A Rockford Senior High School graduate, Ewald is currently a student at the center.
Eight year old Registered Holstein cow Patty Burke Rex 4023679 owned by Ellis and Smith Greene produced 14,260 pounds of milk 562 pounds of butterfat and 1,240 pounds of solids not fat in 299 days setting a herd record noting the animal's owner and farm location.
Bernard Wygle named Conservation Farmer of the Month by Butler Soil Conservation District Commissioners at Allison meeting. Wygle praised for farm tile and terrace work, contouring, waterways, and service as District Commissioner. Ramblers and Ramblerettes posted three weekly wins, with key games against Nora Springs, Clarksville, and Nashua. girls beat Nora Springs then lost to Clarksville in double overtime while edging Nashua.
Ernest Tjarks of Iowa Falls died January 11 after a lingering illness at Eilsworth Hospital. Born September 16 1904 to Arend C and Caroline Brandt Tjarks he married Anta Marie Whipple in 1927. Survived by his wife five sons three daughters three sisters six brothers and twenty seven grandchildren. Services were held January 13 at the Christian Church in Iowa Falls with Rev. Richard Sweeney officiating.
Ralph H. Voss of Aredale VA has been promoted to airman third in the United States Air Force. Son Veson, child of Hermion N. and Voss, is a student at the Keesier Technical Training Center in Mississippi. Dumont Community High School.
Mr. Jerome F. McDermott of Greene High School conducts a Civil Defense Adult Education course in New Hartford Iowa. The seven week program started January 15 1964 with radiological monitors training for the town shelter at the New Hartford Elevator Company. Federal supplies for the shelter arrived January 16 1964.
Todd Moser aged 17 months son of Mr and Mrs Roger Moser had eye surgery at St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Mason City on Friday morning and was brought home Saturday This was his second eye operation Mrs Gene Curtis long time patient at University Hospitals in Iowa City underwent brain surgery on Monday morning
