1961 Butler County graduates 30 percent stay local

A survey by the Butler County Superintendent details the post graduation status of the 1961 class. Of 1961 graduates, 30 percent work in the county or at home, 29 percent pursue education, and 13 percent of the boys serve. Many remain in county communities or return to family farms, with notable numbers working in garages and on retail or construction jobs.

James Louis Bartels Arrested for DWI in Greene County

James Louis Bartels, 19, of Grundy Center, was arrested December 6 by the New Hartford Marshal on operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He appeared in Justice Frank Knight's Court in Greene. bond set at $500 for the next term, bond furnished December 7, and he was released from the county jail.

Greene High School Winter Concert Set Next Tuesday

Greene Community High School music departments present their annual winter concert next Tuesday December 18 at 7 45 p m in the auditorium. The Girls Glee Club of 32 members will sing Christmas songs including Song of the Holy Night with Sue Miller Gloria Arends and others soloing. The 75 member mixed chorus will perform Chorus in the Skies with soloists Gloria Day Vae Brinkman Bill Thompson and Leon Glaspie plus Sara Jane Green on bass viol. The Concert Band of 75 will feature a flute choir and pieces such as Beguine Festival Flutation Riffin the Blues Exodus and 650 East. Refreshments will follow in the vocal music room. Directors Glenda Landsgaard and Ray Holtz invite the public.

David Plank Dies of Leukemia in Bethesda

Mrs Maude Stevens reports the death of David Plank age 14 at Bethesda National Research Institute after weeks of leukemia treatment. He was the son of Mr and Mrs David Plank of Wilmington Del with burial in the East. Survived by a sister Cindy and by their mother Peggy Oehmke, daughter of Mrs Frank Oehmke of Wilmington. The family formerly lived at Greene and Guttenberg.

Mr and Mrs Galen Menken plan to make their home on a farm southeast of Greene following their marriage on November 24. The bride was Carol Majewski daughter of Dale and Mrs Majewski, and the groom is son of George Menken and the late Mrs Menken.

Firemen Hold Annual Oyster Stew Meeting

The annual Firemans oyster stew was held Monday night at the Veterans Club. Thirty-two firemen, the mayor, councilmen and township trustees from surrounding townships attended. Fireman Wilbur Klassi prepared the stew and lunch. A business meeting followed with officers elected for the coming year: Lowell Maxson as chief, Francis Teeple as assistant chief, and Donovan Ruffridge as secretary-treasurer.

Air Force officer reassigned to Oklahoma base

First Lieutenant Lloyd Graven, after completing the US Air Force course for legal officers at Lackland AFB, is reassigned to Clinton Sherman AFB Oklahoma. He will join the Judge Advocate staff. Graven, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry N. Graven of Greene, held a Minnesota law degree and was with the Minnesota Attorney General office before enlisting. He is married to Virginia S. Fischer of Ellendale Minnesota.

New residents Mr and Mrs Ronald Dralle of Plainfield welcomed a son Jeffrey Gene born December 10 at Charles City weighing 7 pounds 5 ounces. Bill Adams and William Bartlett families also welcomed sons December 6 and December 8 at Cedar Valley and St Joseph Mercy Hospitals. In sports Greene Ramblers defeated Manly 62 58 with a fourth quarter rally while Ramblerettes beat North Central 38 36. Jesse Kingery and Harry Barth led the Ramblers with clutch minutes and Daryl Fischer blocked shots. Ramblerettes led by Martha Stuntz and Ruth Jepsen with 17 and 16 points.

Jail arrest and plea in Parkersburg driving suspended

Michael Jay Allison of Parkersburg was arrested December 6 by the highway patrol and charged with driving with a suspended license. He appeared in Paul Stewarts court in Parkersburg and pleaded guilty, receiving a 30 day sentence in the county jail.

To Sing in Nation's Capitol With St Johns Chorus

Bernard McKigney of Dougherty and Don Hart of Marble Rock join the St Johns University Men's Chorus for the National Capitol Pageant of Peace opening. The 28 member group will perform at the National Christmas tree lighting December 17 as President Kennedy lights the tree. Directed by Gerhard Track the chorus will also sing portions of the live televised program. Bernard is a sophomore and Don a freshman at St Johns University Collegeville Minnesota both majors in music.

Butler County R E C Announces 25th Anniversary Dividend

The Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative will return 132000 to members in early December 1962, adding to 107000 already returned in 1960. The total 239000 marks a 10 percent cut in electric service costs for those served, on top of a 2 percent reduction begun in 1961. Ken Lacy, manager, cites rising operating costs yet sustained lower rates through increased member usage and sound management, with the board pledging lowest feasible rates.
