The Editor Cecil Starkweather presented a Life Award to Scouter Bob Fischer Monday night. Fischer is described as 6 foot 4 inches, while Starkweather is 5 foot 10 percent inches. The piece notes ongoing scout activity and a sense that rural farmers will soon resume field work as weather shifts.
Mr and Mrs Michael Myers of Cedar Rapids welcome a daughter named Kristen Rae born April 13. Mrs Myers is the former Jane Allison, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Allison of Greene.
Guest speaker Miss Wyla Weekley, Congo veteran evacuated in the uprising, will address Calvary Baptist Church Greene on Saturday night April 18 and twice on Sunday April 19 at 11:00 am and 8:00 pm. Saturday’s Youth Rally invites youths from fifteen area churches. Sunday services are open to the public.
In Charles City Ivan Clikeman was taken by ambulance from Cedar Valley Hospital to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota on Sunday morning with complications after a tractor accident at his farm on March 18.
Butler County students Leland Neumeyer Keith Lindaman Jane Sherman Jeanette Freeseman Janelle Stemmerman and Bill Codner will compete Wednesday April 15 at 8 p m in Allison City Hall for the Soil Conservation District contest on How Soil and Water Conservation Affects My Future. Prizes include a 25 savings bond for the winner and 10 and 5 cash for second and third. The district winner advances to July regional contest.
John K. Sylvester receives promotion to Lieutenant Colonel at Fort Meade, continuing service with the Second United States Army. Born in Greene to Mrs. Nelle Sylvester and the late R. W. Sylvester, he served in World War II and the Korean War, earned a PhD at the University of Iowa, and completed multiple military schools before current enrollment in the Command and General Staff College.
Democrats nominate five candidates for Clerk of the District Court in a June 1 primary. Republican hopefuls include Leo Catshall Ernest DeBower Henry Langfritz Vernon Schuck and Walter Wilhelm with former clerk Hugh Mosher not seeking reelection. Republicans also vie for County Treasurer and Second District Supervisor while Democrats file for Sheriff and First District Supervisor. Butler County Democrats meet April 18 at 7 30 p m at Allison Court House with delegates chosen March 23.
Betty Wirth daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Wirth has been hired as supervisor of Perrin Park playground activities for the summer. She is a freshman at State College of Iowa Cedar Falls majoring in art.
Infant Allen Dwight Schroeder, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Schroeder, was baptized at St Peters Lutheran Church Sunday morning with sponsors William Bohlen of Allison Mrs Archie Brett Jr of Benson Minnesota and Earl Schroeder of Greene. Dinner guests included the Salges Bohlen Schroeder Brodt and other Schroeders from several nearby towns. afternoon visitors came from Waterloo.
Donald Shultz of Dougherty faced a court action with Fine J. FP. Moffett presiding for operating without a license. He paid a five dollar fine and four dollars in costs.
The Greene Community High School senior class will travel to Minneapolis Minnesota by train at 3 52 a m Friday with sponsors. They will register at Hotel Dyckman and visit Betty Crocker Test Kitchens and Dunwoody Institute before a bus tour of St Paul and Minneapolis. An Ice Follies show is scheduled in the evening and they return home Saturday evening.
Mrs Dale Van Enam of Parkersburg is listed as a patient at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo following a surgery performed two weeks ago. She is described as the former Thelma Blake of Greene.
The Cub Scout Pack meeting is moved from April 22 to Wednesday evening April 29. It will be held at the elementary school at 7:30 p.m.
GreeneRamblers beat Rockwell-Swaledale 2 to 1 in opener as Jim Crale scored on Jerry Fischer single and late winning run forced by walk and error. In next game Alan Marsh threw a one hitter as Greene blanked Dumont 6 to 0 with Steve Clapham delivering a two run homer in the second inning.
A Greene Town Council meeting gathered representatives from several organizations to evaluate options for a proposed swimming pool funded by Mrs. Etta Buchholz. Robert Paddock of Paddock Engineering outlined Kooster property, Elementary School site, and Perrin Park as choices, stressing size and placement and presenting projected usage figures. The session included a Q&A and a private council review of public input.
The Greene Community School schedules its annual kindergarten round-up for Friday April 24 at the elementary building. To enroll for 1964-65 a child must be five by September 15, bring a birth certificate, with registration separated by last name A through MM 9:00 to 11:30 and N through Z 1:00 to 3:30. A book rental of 4.00 and math fees of 0.90 per semester or 1.80 per year are due at registration to finalize counts for next year supplies.
Butler County Board of Supervisors rejected a plan to form a drainage district in west central Butler County at Allison on April 6. The 8,000 acre proposed district in Ripley and Madison townships included land west of the Big Marsh along the West Fork South of Allison. Most landowners objected, saying it would not materially benefit the lands or the public.

The first stag supper of the season will be held at the Country Club on Tuesday evening April 21. Tickets may be purchased from any member of the board of directors.
David P Ipsen a machinist mate fireman apprentice USN son of Mr and Mrs Harry J T Ipsen serves aboard the anti submarine warfare support aircraft carrier USS Bennington based out of Long Beach California. Bennington operates in the Far East on a six month tour with the Seventh Fleet and is scheduled to visit Yokosuka Japan in the near future.
The ranger's house at the Winnebago Council Scout Reservation near Marble Rock will be dedicated at a ceremony Sunday April 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The public is invited. Visitors should enter via the North entrance to the grounds.
The Iowa legislature in special session approved a permanent reapportionment plan creating a 50 member Senate and 114 member House. The plan, opposed by some Republicans who argued it crossed county lines, requires a 1965 legislative vote and a public referendum to take effect. Governor Hughes had summoned lawmakers after a federal court ruled the previous map malapportioned.
Mr and Mrs Howard Burroughs and Jane have returned from a visit in the home of Mrs Burroughs brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Ben Hall and Linda at Avon South Dakota Mrs Havel Ray who spent eight months in the Hall home returned to Greene with them.
David Bone and Tony Tornowske receive Eagle awards at the Boy Scout Court of Honor held in the Elementary School Auditorium. The event featured awards by Richard Scroggins with support from Winnebago Council Eagle Scouts.
Mrs A F Lindell Sr was taken to Park Hospital in Masson City on Monday where she underwent surgery Tuesday morning. Her daughter Mrs Maxine Anderson arrived Saturday and will stay with her mother until the latter part of the week.
Mr and Mrs George L Shafer return from Chandler Arizona where they spent the winter. They visited their son Harlan Shafer and family in Worland Wyoming and their son-in-law Edward Ledwig and family in Saint Charles Missouri on the way home.
A Tri County banquet at the Moose Club in Charles City last evening honored area town players and coaches. Drake University coach Maurie John of Des Moines was guest speaker.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Porter of Seven Fountains Virginia are visiting at the home of Mrs Porters mother Mrs Leon Kocher. They are en route home after spending the winter in California and Phoenix Arizona.
Army PFC Leon D Williamson of Mrs Leora Williamson Greene son 1st Infantry Division joined a two week field training near Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Division men acted as military and police in counter guerrilla warfare against imagined Woodland insurgents while Woodland forces attempted to destroy the republic. Williamson a scout driver with Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 18th Infantry entered service in August 1960.
