Meteor Seen Over City and Fire Committee Report

A bright meteor appeared Tuesday night about 8 20 PM in the eastern sky. It moved downward with a slight southern tilt and spread to three times its original size before vanishing. The event was witnessed by several residents. a local comparison noted it near the size of the previous large meteor observed eight or nine years ago. The Common Council reported the Fire Committee’s endorsement of a new fire extinguisher pending funding. City Engineer announced completion of the alley improvement from Jackson to Market, Walnut to Poplar, at $127.23. Sidewalk work on East Washington Street was postponed indefinitely. Engine House No. 2 rental matter referred to Fire committee.

Skelton Family Attacked by Mob at Fern Store

In Fern a Republican man and his two sons suffered knife and club blows from Hall and Williams after a disputed election. The elder Skelton was wounded in multiple places. the younger son defended with nippers. Alleged attackers fled as the crowd surged in. An affidavit was filed and a preliminary trial set before Squire Catherwood.

Local Resident Killed by Fast Train Near Carbon

Joel Thomas Sr a respected Madison Township resident was killed by the No 3 passenger train east of Carbon last Saturday night. The train ran without a headlight at high speed after a cow was struck, leaving Thomas fatally injured as he attempted to move off the track. He lived in the county most of his life near seventy years old. The piece also notes rink activities at City Hall and Opera House with new management from Indianapolis and nightly music.
