Local items report gloomy Easter weather and scarce eggs, ongoing repairs at Jones barber shop, and community events. GreenCastle news notes dull business but lively social life, with political chatter about city tickets and election aftermath. University land transfers, local property moves, and a joke on Jim Hays closing with a playful jab at an editor.
The Belle Union school was organized at Alley last Sabbath with officers including Superintendent K PSuperintendent, Treasurer Nevada Hill, and Assistant James Harcourt. In Mill Creek the more favorable candidate for president is W L Gresham with Stewart C Woodford also mentioned.
Easter Sunday was widely observed in Green Castle with full church attendances. Presbyterian services featured Rev G W Bainum and a fiftieth anniversary Sunday school program. Catholic services included Low Mass High Mass and Vespers. Locust Street M E W R Halstead preached in the morning and Easter readings followed. College Avenue Dr Cissel led 10:30 sermon with an Easter concert by the Sunday school in the evening. Jones Art Gallery hosted EpIscopalian Easter service led by Rev Runkle with no evening service. Dr J C Ridpath concluded his General History manuscript today, a 4000 page work to be released in two volumes by Jones Bros Co and illustrated with engravings and maps.
Members met at Jones Art Gallery forming St. Johns Parish with J K Langdon Senior Warden and F A Arnold Junior Warden. Lieut Goe named secretary and six vestrymen chosen. A St Johns Guild women’s society organized with Mrs Goe President and Mrs Han na Secretary.
The piece mourns the sudden departure of Harry Edmunds the foreman. It notes payments owed him by locals and warns others not to hire him. Council votes to improve Franklin Street and discusses Soldiers' Monument repairs at Forest Hill cemetery. The Peek a Boo Social Club held a large dance at the Opera House with supper at the DePauw. A serial based on the 1877 Pittsburgh riots will begin in The Current. Hood’s Sarsaparilla is recommended for spring ailments and impure blood.
