Remarkable Lifespans And Vitality From Old Records

A collage of age stories from Kentucky to Maryland and beyond highlights centenarians and near-centenarians. Notable figures include Mrs. Gillispie of Morgan County aged 103 who walks two miles to church, Matilda Stevenson who lived to 105 and was baptized in Paris, Kentucky, and Rutia Simpers who died at 110 in the Nikton almshouse after a slave era to freedom arc. The piece also notes a 93 year old Carmel resident at a daughter’s funeral, 88 year old Mrs. Julia Smith Parker celebrating a May anniversary in Glastonbury, and Mrs Brassell of Grand Rapids described as founding a century of life while mother to 17 children. Other souls are described in vivid, if quirky, detail: 10 year old Harry Skinner in Powell County with thinning hair and new teeth, Jim Ingraham, a Wynn’s Mill elder hailed for vitality and humor, and Joshua Halbert of Crawford County still cheerful despite chronic rheumatism and 11 bears killed in 1816. A madam Aunt Hester and Aunt Saran Mosely reflect emancipation-era memories and family lineage with long-lived kin and historic roles. The tone blends obituary-like reminiscence with antiquarian anecdotes.
