Thousands gather in Greencastle for a civic day the parade shortened by a national calamity. Gov. Hendricks delivers a patriot narrative tracing the Revolution and the formation of a stronger United States, urging balance between state and federal powers and warning against consolidation and monopoly.
In Greencastle Putnam County the Fourth of July featured a reading of the nation’s founding principles, a victory by the Brick Chapel Sabbath School for a banner prize, and speeches by Maj. Jonathan Birch John Hanna and Rev. Dr. A Marine. A resolution denouncing the attempted assassination of the President was adopted. Festivities included fireworks and community pride as residents reflected on liberty and prosperity.
