The local university schedules a special chapel service for Disease Prevention Day with band services promised. A partial program is released as plans unfold for the event and a broad campaign against waste is announced.
DePauw University faculty urged a Friday celebration focused on disease prevention. A special chapel service will open activities, with a university official address on civic improvement. Earl Lane was named master of the day. the band will march in the parade and perform on the courthouse lawn.
Citizens advocate removing the old woolen mill and an old house at Madison and Jacob streets. They call for airtight garbage cans emptied daily, draining Pittmans pond to stop mosquitoes, street can waste disposal, enforcement of spitting bans, and maintaining lawns with trees flowers and weed control to improve the city’s appearance and health.
A large crowd gathered for the formal opening of the campaign by the Putnam County Democrats. The event included a mass meeting and conference of candidates and the central committee, promising an auspicious start.
Putnam County to host a large Democratic mass meeting with Governor Samuel Ralston to speak at 1 PM. Central committee gathering at 10, county candidates’ meeting at 11, and a 1 PM rally draw delegates from all precincts. Governor to depart Greencastle for New Albany after the event.
Quincy Council accepts an invitation to confer a degree on a candidate October 7. Attendance urged to plan the entrance of the Quincy delegation on October 7. Col C C Matson recently moved to Chicago and visited Green Castle while suffering rheumatism.
Greencastle public schools observed disease prevention day with pupil essays on health topics. H A Henderson praises the essays, including a five grade pupil Gilbert Snider from the first ward who writes about the topic with enthusiasm.
Property holders on South College Avenue oppose proposed street improvements and call for sidewalks on both sides. They ask the matter be considered by the City Council.
The council discussed expanding cement sidewalks and curbing on south College avenue from Washington to Berry streets. University representatives urged building on both sides, including the Parke to Berry section, while objections cited cost and a widowed property owner. The council will reconsider at the next regular session.
Local ad urges shoppers to buy clothing at the Hub with the line Other well dressed folks do, highlighting deals and a quick pitch to boost attire purchases.
