Mary Adens, a 65 year old woman, was attacked near 9:30 p.m. Sunday on South Bloomington Street. An unidentified man dragged the victim across a lawn to a shed behind Frank Talbot's home.
Police pursue a clue in the Sunday night attack on 65 year old Mrs. Mary Adkins in Bloomington Street area. Evelyn Due identifies a known black man as the assailant. bloodhounds join search but suspect remains at large.
After evening services a black man provided a perfect alibi and arrived in Greencastle near 11 pm. The assault happened shortly before 9 pm. Officers contained several other colored men at the jail but found no arrest-worthy clues.
Vernon E. Abbott was arrested Friday night by Sheriff Sears and a posse who found a large still in Floyd township. He appeared before Mayor Zeis Saturday night and his bond was set at $1000 with a trial scheduled for next Saturday. Abbott said friends would post bond Monday. Warrants have been issued for T. B. Snedegar and his son, but no arrests have yet been made.
The Greencastle Specials beat the Lincoln Highway of Indianapolis 8 to 5. Jimmy Wilson from San Antonio starred on the mound with 19 strikeouts, lifting the team as Ott Webb secured his services for the season. Wilson is expected to pitch again against the St Louis Cardinals on September 27.
A thirteen year old boy sustained severe cuts to face and arms when a Ford driven by Fred Nichols of Terre Haute rear ended a car stopped on Deer Creek Hill along the Cloverdale road five miles south of Greencastle. Nichols' car was damaged and towed to a local garage after the collision Sunday evening around 7:30. The boy was placed in another vehicle and taken to a physician.
The body of John Eddy Haskell physician of Chicago and DePauw University 1897 will be brought here Wednesday for burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. He died of paralysis stroke after a notable career at DePauw Samaritan Hospital Chicago and the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He married Estelle Baldwin of Marion in 1904 and was brother to Mrs Minnie Wheeler of Evansville.
The eight DePauw University sororities concluded their rush on Saturday afternoon after a shorter period this year. Tea invitations determined pledges, with lists including Mary Carmack Rockville Ruth Kelley Westville Roberta Lockeridge Washington and many others from Indiana towns and beyond.
Chevrolet roadster owned by Mr and Mrs Garold Handy of 308 West Washington street disappeared Sunday evening from near the State House in Indianapolis between 6 and 8 30. The Handy pair learned of the theft when they returned home from an interurban journey.
Franklin Indiana Mayor Harry C. Hougham arranged a centennial event for September 21 in Greencastle utilizing Charles Rivers and his Holstein driving ox. Rivers will be paid 50 dollars plus transportation costs. the ox will travel to Franklin and back by truck. Lee Boswell, formerly of Putnam County, is visiting and works for the Tennessee dredging project with the government.
The Rev. H. C. Clippinger is named to continue as pastor of Locust Street Methodist Church. Prof. H. B. Gough of DePauw is named as pastor for Cloverdale Methodist Church by the Indiana District of the Methodist Episcopal Church meeting in Evansville. The Conference next year will be held in Indianapolis.
Joe Hurst was fined 200 dollars and sentenced to six months on the state farm after pleading no defense before Mayor Zeis. He immediately appealed to the Putnam Circuit Court and posted a 1000 dollar bond for trial there.
Posey township in Franklin county is without a trustee for sixty days as Clem Pruitt, the current trustee, is sent to the penal farm near Greencastle for two months after pleading guilty to unlawful manufacture of liquor.
Volz Camp No 3349 of the Modern Woodmen of America will hold a meeting Tuesday at 7 30 PM in their hall on East Washington street. All neighbors are urged to attend this important gathering.
The Penelope Club will meet Tuesday afternoon at 2 30 oclock with Mrs Clyde Walls.
At the Rusellville event the county Sunday School Association elected officers for the coming year led by President W. L. Raphael. Gr eencastle Township and Wesley Chapel earned the attendance banners while Miss Mick retired as secretary-treasurer.
Marion Ohio September 14 Charles D Schaffner filed bond of 750000 to qualify as administrator of the estate of the late President Warren G Harding, named executor of the will as the first formal indication of the estate size.
