Craft Sues His Guardian Over Bad Check

Edwin M. Craft, a Indianapolis jeweler, sues Isaac Peck guardian of Fay D. Pickens to recover 32.50 plus 2.10 protest fees for a returned check. The check paid for a watch and scarf pin but bounced with no account. Pickens, a Cloverdale boy, allegedly used the mails to defraud and has disappeared since early summer.

Monon Payroll Report Denies Padding Rumors

A management report for Monon Railroad confirms no payroll padding was found after rumors linked dead workers to Lafayette and other locations. General Westfall stated employees receive checks, mailed or delivered via a biannual pay car, with signed receipts. The last pay car trip showed no discrepancies and the company stressed honesty and integrity amid optimistic business forecasts.

Fraternity Disbands at Greencastle High School

Local news reports Beta Phi Sigma members at Greencastle High School have disbanded their fraternal group. The move leaves the school with no active fraternities or fraternal organizations on campus as of Monday.

At Monday chapel principal Dalman disbanded the Beta Phi Sigma chapter and required all boy students once affiliated to sign a pledge to avoid any fraternity activity for the rest of their high school years. Those failing to comply risked forfeiting their diploma. Algunos members who attended a Terre Haute convention were questioned by the school board but allowed to continue in school. A state wide Indiana movement aims to keep fraternities out of high schools.

Robert Goodbar Arrested for Fraud and Check Cashing

Robert L. Goodbar of Ladoga and Otis Courtney were arrested after cashing a $5 check claiming auto trouble near Montmorenci. A Lafayette suitcase contained wire tapping gear and a New York pool room tip clipping. Investigators found another forged $25 check and linked past fraud in Indianapolis for $200.

Inquest Opened Into Yopp Killing Case

Coroner R J Gillespie holds an inquest today into the Yopp killing. Ralph Boone, with Thomas Howard at the time of the stabbing, was the first witness questioned. Boone is jailed and was brought to the coroner’s office at 2 PM by Deputy Sheriff Kelley. The inquest likely will run several days.

DePauw Loses $20000 Gift as Dixon Changes Mind

Shelbyville Indiana September 9 by the will of the late Mrs Susan Dixon of this city the Methodist Episcopal Hospital and Deaconess Home in Indianapolis will profit about $20000 after debts and funeral expenses are paid. $1000 of her First National Bank stock stays in the bank for vault upkeep at Forest Hill cemetery. John A Young becomes executor with bond of $26000. The estate is personal property mainly in the bank. The bequest memorializes the late Mr Fanny Dixon Morrow. Dixon had no near relatives aside from a son in law and a nephew and nieces not mentioned in the will. She had long lived in Shelbyville and helped in church work. The will probated December 18 1908.

County Superintendent L. U. Wright reports results from the teachers’ examinations sent to the state board for grading. Nine passed and four failed, a higher pass rate than usual. Hubert Howard, charged with robbing the Big Poor Station at Covington and suspected in a similar crime at the Van Station, refused to plead guilty and will stand trial.

Indicted highwayman kept in Covington handcuffed in court

Hughbert Howard, accused of robbing a Big Four station cash drawer and forcing three others at gunpoint, was indicted by a grand jury on robbery and burglary counts. He pleaded not guilty as Judge Lewis was appointed to defend. Trial set for September 19. Sheriff Kerr keeps him handcuffed for security. A Greencastle hotel owner identified him as the March suspect at Covington and Vandalia station holdups.
