The Herald notes reduced price editions of the New Websterian 1912 Dictionary with colored plates and charts. Three bindings offered at six coupons plus 98 cents or less, stressing child education and convenience over bulky encyclopedias, with Will Harris of Indianapolis visiting relatives.
A special DePauw University committee failed to pick a new president from about twenty candidates at a session in Indianapolis. Hugh Dougherty, Fletcher Trust vice president and university board president, chaired the meeting and cautioned that names under consideration would not be released. Investigations continue for ten days with a possible later decision. The vacancy follows Francis J. McConell’s election to a bishopric.
County commissioners named poll inspectors for fall elections. Trustees atop townships appoint in each precinct, listing officials for Clinton, Madison, Greencastle, Jackson, Roachdale, Fincastle, Russell, Floyd, Monroe, Bainbridge, Jefferson, Washington, Mill Creek, Cloverdale, and Warren townships with specific names for each precinct.
The Hon. Claude Bowers of Terre Haute and the Hon. Joseph Shea of Seymour will address Democrats at the court house Wednesday night. Both speakers are described as eloquent and a large crowd is expected. All Democrats are urged to attend, with ladies especially invited.
The next annual Indiana Rural Route Carriers meeting will be in Greencastle on Labor Day. Albert Albaugh Walter Woodrum and Grant Scott secured the year’s venue after attending Shelbyville’s state meeting. About 300 to 400 visitors are expected with a banquet planned by the Nine O Clock Tea Club.
Mr. N. N. Sellers sells land in north Fillmore to Oliver Taylor & Co. for a new town addition. They plan streets, alleys, lots, and homes amid a music band and a $50 gold giveaway. Lots sold at auction Monday at 1:00 PM to the highest bidder.
The Madison Herald reports Professor F. C. Tilden of this city spoke at a teachers' institute in Madison. He analyzed personality through great writers and modern dramatists, noting European socialists in today’s plays. He praised the relevance of modern thought and urged townspeople to explore contemporary literature.
The official board of the Christian church extended a unanimous call to Rev. W. C. Cauble to remain as pastor for another year. The decision will go to the congregation next Sunday for final action and full attendance is urged. Cauble has led the church for three years and boosted Bethany Association efforts with strong management and community impact.
Washington Sept 2 Salaries of thirty thousand rural letter carriers on standard routes will rise from 1000 to 1100 starting September 30 under Postmaster General Hitchcock. Proportionate increases apply to shorter routes, increasing annual disbursements by about four million dollars. A 15 day paid leave after twelve months service is also authorized, costing eighty thousand dollars yearly for substitutes. The eight rural routes from Greencastle post office are affected.
Readiness for the inter denominational district convention is announced. Mrs Eugene Wardlaw of Brazil opens with devotional service tomorrow afternoon. Florence Lanham of Indianapolis leads a conference. Rev L C Richmond of Terre Haute delivers the Wednesday evening address Won by One. Sessions continue Thursday morning sunrise prayer and Thursday evening sermon by Rev J E Gorsuch. Delegates may be hosted by Miss Eugenia Marshall. public invited to all sessions.
Several rule changes will affect plays especially the forward pass as the upcoming season approaches. Officials and teams study the adjustments to penalties, coverage, and passer protections.
The rules committee approves major changes to the forward pass including removal of the coal line restriction and allowing passes anywhere on the field with new six yard counting adjustments. The move aims to increase offensive power and parity. Miss Jean Stroube travels to Indianapolis for the state fair and visits friends.
More than 500 people attended the third annual McCullough reunion at the old homestead farm near Carpenter's Mill. About 350 were direct descendants of William and Lavina McCullough, with Nicholas McCullough giving the principal address and Albert Payne recounting the family history. Officers were re-elected and plans set for a 1913 reunion at the Eel River Baptist church in Cass township.
In Greencastle a well regarded man became stuck in his furnace doorway while inspecting the fire box. He could not extract his shoulders and cried out for help. Family and neighbors pried, squeezed, and groaned him free after a lengthy struggle. The story ends with his identity kept private.
Dr Von Kleinsmid, a DePauw University professor, assumes leadership of the psychology department at the state reformatory in Jeffersonville as part of a statewide reform effort.
Professor Rufus Bernhardt von KleinSmid of DePauw University assumed duties as assistant superintendent at the Indiana Reformatory in Jeffersonville. He will organize a psychology department, review all new arrivals, assess inmates for abnormal development, and, with Superintendent Peyton, develop handling methods. Ready tabulated studies aim to aid penology and crime research.
The Havemeyer family earned 12.95 million from a half share in Western Sugar Refining over 21 years, including 600 thousand in 1898. The company was capitalized with 1 million from the Havemeyers and 1 million from Spreckels, later returned to investors, leaving profits described as velvet. The text accuses a tariff on sugar as a tool for millionaire sugar trust owners.
