Earl Calvin of Indianapolis died after an accident in an automobile race at Coney Island Speedway in Cincinnati Ohio. Calvin had been in auto racing only six months and traveled with his wife from Indianapolis to enter the race. His body was expected to reach Indianapolis today.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle The Herald notes Leona Kelly was pledged to Alpha Omicron Pi. A farm fire west of Brick Chapel burned over 20 acres, nine hay stacks and fencing, with losses in the hundreds. Invitations issued for an October 24 at home. Mrs Lyon and Mrs Asbury attend Bloomington mission conference.
Two investigations are ongoing into a head on crash of two traction cars near Shelbyville Indiana. Victims include Clair Soler 43 Indianapolis and Clarence Buckingham Kokomo. Four injured include William Garbert Arnold Draper Claude Crum George Campbell. Cars were destroyed by fire.
Fire severely damaged the Attica Masonic Temple causing losses to two stores and the National Guard Armory on the lower floors. Estimated damage reached $18,000 with cause undetermined as investigators probe the blaze that began about 2:30 PM in the armory supply room.
In Danville Indiana on October 21 George Wethington 26 of Cartersburg and John Adam 23 of Danville escaped from the county jail at 5 pm. They pried rusty rivets in the cell ceiling and fled across the roof. A stolen car was reported nearby and authorities suspect the pair headed toward Indianapolis. Sheriff Rodney offered a $25 reward for information leading to their recapture.
Dr. FE S Shumaker superintendent of the Indiana Anti Saloon League is pardoned by Gov Ed Jackson and sentenced to sixty days at the Putnamville state farm for contempt of the Indiana State Supreme Court. On arrival he learns of clemency by telephone and replies Is that so. He is assigned prison number 37789.
The group will stage a three act musical comedy titled Flapper Grandmother at the city High School auditorium Tuesday evening. The plot follows Lena Spriggins and Jimmy Swift in an automobile romance, Grandma’s Paris face lift, a bargain sale, and a homecoming by air with a Count, intertwining small town characters, Dr Joy, and Belinda’s flapper transformation.
Governor Smith prepares a major East Coast tour starting in Boston with stops in New York and seven states Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut New Jersey Pennsylvania Maryland to court 135 electoral votes from the East. Analysts note combined with the solid South and border states he could reach 302 electoral votes, surpassing 266 needed for victory.
