Prison transfer ends in fatal escape attempt in Indiana
Herbert C. McGrannahan and twenty-one other prisoners being moved from Jeffersonville reformatory to Michigan City State Prison attempted to overpower guards on a Monon train near San Piero. McGrannahan, about 24, was shot dead by Solon C Vial who aided in the transfer. The escape bid sparked a concerted rush at the guards as two guards were knocked down. The group, described as the era’s most desperate transfer, included Herbert Ledbetter and others with long sentences and prior records.

Automobile thief traced to Greencastle city chase
Four Vincennes men traced a Buick touring car thief to Greencastle after he bought gasoline from a local garage man. At Brownburg near Danville the 19 year old Albert Montgomery was found with the stolen car. He had been paroled from Plainfield last spring and earlier left Greencastle for Vincennes.
