Local columnist notes on straw hat prices ahead of May 15, political plans in Terre Haute and a string of small town happenings. A quick report mentions a 17 year old with bad checks, an elimination shoot for Putnam bankers, an open house at a new eatery near Four Corners, and musings on barbecue sandwiches and lawn mowing.
The Methodist Brotherhood held a banquet at the Community Hall last night with over thirty fathers and sons attending. William Blanchard Jr and his orchestra provided music as H R Williams led the group in the Brotherhood song. Professor C D W Hildebrand, president, offered grace before a dinner served by a church section, marking the year's final event.
Captain Ralph Howard, superintendent of the state penal farm, will speak at the May Brotherhood dinner of the First M. E. church next Tuesday evening May 20 at 6 20. He has worked closely with crime problems and led the state farm for many years.
Nineteen Putnam county residents will graduate from DePauw University in June. Fourteen hail from Greencastle, with more than 300 seniors candidates for degrees in commencement exercises on Monday, June 9. Nineteen include three music majors and sixteen liberal arts graduates, many planning to teach their subjects.
Richmond Indiana May 18 ten airplanes were destroyed in a blaze at the Davis Aircrafts corporation plant with an estimated loss of about 40000 All Richmond fire companies fought the fire and saved the warehouse and the adjoining factory where more aircraft parts were under construction Walter Davis president of the firm said the loss was insured and attributed the origin to be undetermined The plant had recently acquired Vulcan Aircraft models from Portsmouh Ohio and moved its operations to the city
Republican county chairmen across Indiana gather to choose district chairs who join the state committee. The Fifth District race at Terre Haute pits James Rapier against Mark Nebeker, with A R Chenoweth of Putnam County as county chair. Democratic leaders meet tomorrow to select district chairs and then state party officials in Indianapolis. Albert L. Clark of Cayuga likely to remain district chairman.
Several visitors toured Putnam County Hospital on National Hospital Day. The annual baby picture was taken at four o clock. Mothers returned with their children while directed play by John Cartwright engaged youngsters on the hospital lawn from eight to four.
Chamber officials report registration blanks for uncounted residents of Green Castle district. Henry K Thompson, Terre Haute census director, coordinates with Miss Helen Black at First National Bank for obtaining blanks. Twenty unenumerated individuals have already notified Miss Black. others urged to submit names, as additions may raise Green Castle’s ten year increase to about fifty thousand dollars.
Mrs. Lee Reeves announces a Greencastle Child Welfare Committee fund of 100 to correct defective vision for needy city children and to provide dental care. County nurse Mary Agnes Miller will supervise examinations and determine treatments. The committee has long provided milk and dental work for ward school children and funded classes for several children.
Crawfordsville businessman Robert R. Clark was elected Montgomery County Democratic chairman by precinct and vice precinct committeemen from 26 precincts. He succeeds Ira R. Clouser, now a candidate for joint state senator of Montgomery and Putnam counties.
Washington reports that the income tax bill is defeated with a three fourths voting against amendments. Green Castle finances are under city council review as last year’s revenue showed a deficit. Calumet club hosted a Halley’s comet dance with guests lingering until 3 AM. Greencastle and Cloverdale post office workers plan a social visit tonight hosted by Charles Rockwell.
Indiana state funds deposited in the defunct State Savings and Trust Co. are covered by a 125000 bond. Governor Marty G. Leslie and Pliny Woolford and Clarence Wysong held bank stock and face potential recovery assessments. Over 100000 of state funds were on deposit in Indianapolis with portions from the state treasury and related offices.

The Corps Area C M T C officer reports Indiana at 85 percent of its state quota with enrollments arriving faster than before. nationwide the Corps Area is over 99 percent filled while Indiana has 1 020 of 1 200 candidates enrolled. Counties Fulton Martin Pike Rush and Vanderburg completed their quotas this week.
Mrs. L C Conrad president of the First Ward PTA announced pre school children will be examined at 8 am at the school to detect defective vision and hearing. Drs Ayler Hutcheson and Throop volunteer their services with nurse Mary Agnes Miller and PTA members assisting. About 25 to 30 children are expected to be examined as preparations continue for all city preschoolers in coming weeks.
Miss Julia Ann Baird died Saturday at Putnam county hospital. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at McCurry Funeral Home with Rev. H. A. Sherrill, interment in Brick Chapel cemetery. Out of town mourners included Mrs. William Gillespie and two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Ball, Mrs. Grace Miller, Robert Norwood, Mrs. Hattie Eddy of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Jennie Baird of Danville. She had lived with the W. D. James family for years and was an aunt of Mrs. W. D. James.
DePauw topped Wabash 10 to 3 on the Wabash diamond as eight eighth inning runs broke open a close game. Wildman and Weist allowed six hits apiece, with Weist homering for Wabash. five Wabash infield errors aided the rally.
William Cline a 17 year old boy from a Russellville area farm was arrested by Marshal Ott Dobbs as he prepared to buy a Ford tire using bad checks. He had visited multiple stores including J C Penney Star Store and J F Cannon Co and admitted passing worthless checks. He faced arraignment before Judge Hughes on the bad checks charge.
Terre Haute Jertsmeyer baseball team defeated Greencastle 14 to 5 at McKeen Field on Monday. Greencastle jumped to five runs in the first inning behind Tobin, but could not solve the Terre Haute hitters thereafter as Bausman and Evan Crawley contended on the mound.
