Lloyd Brown Wins Another For Washington Club

Lloyd Brown, formerly of the Greencastle Specials, pitched a decisive win for the Washington Senators Friday, defeating the Chicago White Sox 14 to 3 in a WS played in Washington.

Death of Aaron W Tolin of Lawrence

Word arrived of the death of Aaron W Tolin aged about 60 of Lawrence Indiana. He died this morning at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis after gallbladder surgery. Born in Putnam County on the Tolin farm north of Greencastle he later lived near Greencastle before moving about 25 years ago. Survivors include his widow and two children Delton Tolin and Mrs Lelia Dicks of Indianapolis.

Putnam County Hospital Adds Upgraded X Ray Lab

Dr W M McGaughey of Indianapolis funded new X ray equipment for Putnam county hospital to modernize the laboratory. The upgrade includes a stereopticon device to produce two pictures for depth, improving skull and chest imaging and matching standards in well equipped hospitals. The hospital board approved the expenditure as the first major addition since the lab’s seven years ago installation.

McCammon Opens Modern Super Service Garage in Roachdale

Grover McCammon expands from a local garage to a full service station at the Randall garage site on north Indiana street. The upgraded facility features curb gas and oil, interior tire and battery work, auto laundry, hydraulic hoist, high pressure grease gun, air tools, full parts line, and is led by Mr McCammon with Mrs McCammon overseeing the front. The Greencastle fire dept. also responded to a trash fire behind Roy Abrams home on West Poplar Street, extinguishing it with chemical.

Eighth Grade Pupils Stage Splendid Green Castle Show

Eighth grade pupils at Green Castle Public Schools presented a lively program in the High School Auditorium Friday night. The event showcased dancing, readings, solos, and an operetta Way Down South in Dixie with listed cast and chorus, featuring Orville O Hair, Wilbur McCollough, Emily Caroline Conklin, Winifred Grimes, Kenneth Peck, and Frances Robertson among others.

Cloverdale Town Board Grants Gas Franchise

Cloverdale will soon receive city gas after the town board signed a franchise with the gas company that laid the pipeline along National road and state road 45. The move promises home gas service for Cloverdale and surrounding areas, marking a notable improvement for the small city.

Condition of James Hughes Improves After Injury

The condition of James H. Hughes, son of Judge and Mrs. James P. Hughes, who suffered a fractured skull and broken left thigh in an automobile accident near Terre Haute a week ago, is reported to be growing better each day. He had been unconscious since the crash, and doctors feared a fatal outcome before gradual improvement.

Dr. T. A. Sigler of Greencastle was elected chairman of the Putnam County Democratic committee replacing Ott Webb after four years. A. R. Chenoweth was re-elected as Republican county chairman, praised for his effective leadership and success in guiding the party.

Tiger Tennis Squad Defeats Cardinals

DePauw tennis team defeated Ball Teachers College of Muncie 6 to 4. Singles results include Hughes defeating Richardson 6-2 6-4 and Naftzner beating Martin 6-4 6-1. McCormick beat McDavitt 6-1 6-4, Smith won over Dalley 6-4 2. Doubles saw Hughes and Gable prevail 1-6 7-5 6-2, while North and Naftzger won 6-4 4-6 6-4.

Indiana Good Will Air Tour set for June 16 to 21

The 1980 Indiana Good Will Air Tour sponsored by the Indiana Aircraft Trades Association runs June 16 to 21. Seventeen planes are entered with more expected, visiting eighteen cities before returning to Mars Hill Airport in Indianapolis. Four overnight stops are confirmed in Evansville, Terre Haute, Gary and Muncie.

Two Men Sentenced in City Court This Morning

John Hamilton and George L. Hamilton were convicted in city court and fined for assault and battery and drawing a deadly weapon. Both were released on bonds and appeals were filed to the circuit court. George received a 30 day jail term and a $5 fine with a $500 peace bond.

Enraged Cow Attacks Mrs James Estep Near Greencastle

Mrs. James Estep north of Greencastle was gored by a cow while aiding a calf. she suffered a temple and left rib injury. The son beat off the animal as Dr. A B Ayler dressed the wounds noting they are painful but not serious.

Texas Town overrun by mob in Sherman riot

A lynch mob burned Grayson County courthouse to cremation George Hughes, a negro prisoner, as guards and militia struggled to control the rioters. Six stores burned, women joined the frenzy, while Gov. Moody ordered National Guard reinforcements to restore order despite clashes and a wounded officer. The mob, estimated at 1500, dragged the cremated body through streets after breaking into the vault.
