The thirteenth annual Greencastle Public Schools eighth grade show was staged Friday night in the High School Auditorium. The two part program featured a mixed chorus, saxophone duets, shadow boxing, cartooning by four boys, trombone and cornet solos, and a humorous reading.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed the old frame barn on the Reese farm along East Washington Street about seven miles east of town Friday near midnight. Farming implements and a Ford coupe kept in the barn were lost. There was no insurance on the barn or its contents. The barn stood on the old Buis home farm and was among the oldest in the county section.
Uriah Gasaway, aged 101, a Mexican War veteran and Putnam County’s oldest resident, died at his daughter’s home in Reelsville. Born in Kentucky on Christmas Day 1826, he served in Co D of the United States Mounted Riflemen with General Scott and General Taylor, fought to capture Mexico City, and settled in the county in 1852. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Beeseville Church, with a large veterans’ procession and various posts in charge of rites.
Jesse M. Lee post 1 550 Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet Monday at 7 30 p m at the city library. Memorial Day plans a joint committee with the Legion and delegate and alternate to Greensburg state convention will be elected. All members and ex service men urged to attend.
George M. Barnard of Newcastle an attorney and former Indiana Public Service Commission member will deliver the keynote address at the Republican State Convention May 23 and 24. Barnard was chosen by the arrangements committee per secretary Harry C. Fenton. The Democratic state committee will reorganize May 18. District committees also to be organized May 18 says Democratic state chairman R. Earl Peters.

Lieutenants Zeus Soneck and Arthur Gavin completed a 36 hour 5 minute endurance flight in the PN 2 seaplane. The 19 000 pound craft landed only after fuel was exhausted, setting a new world record for seaplanes by seven hours 29 minutes. In Indiana, James Survance 50 Democratic sheriff candidate died in a crash near Washington after his car was hit by a truck driven by Albert Passwater. Survance left 15 children.
Eldorado Kansas May 6 youth 17, the sole Oberst survivor, admitted to authorities he killed five brothers and sister and mother and set the Burns farm home on fire to conceal the crime.
Announcement: Trick Bros store on East Washington street sold to G C Murphy Co. A.K.R. Tuttle, manager, said the Mur phy chain will remodel the building and install new fixtures and merchandise. Murphy stores operate in 140 locations nationwide and in Indiana towns including Brazil and Indianapolis. Tuttle plans to relocate with his wife once a new site is found.
Miss Lesbie Kiefer age 15 and Waldron Crawley age 17 eloped Saturday and were married in Paris. Miss Lessie Garner of Putnamville visits cousin Miss Ella Bowman. Grace Frankenberger spent the day in Indianapolis. Fleming Lynch and Earl Lynch visited Cairo Illinois to see their uncle J J Lynch. Fred Ader and family visited Fillmore with V S Biddle and family.
In Kansas City on May 4 a Methodist Episcopal church trial opened for Bishop Anton Bast of Copenhagen on charges of imprudent conduct. Rev Croneil J. McConnell of Pittsburgh was designated judge amid accusations from Rev George A Cooke of Wilmington Del accusing McConnell of embracing evolution. The case centers on Wilmington conference conduct and alleged suppression of proceedings with Cooke calling the ACLU a dangerous group and noting historic doctrinal rifts dating to Boston University.
The Greencastle banks will be closed all day Tuesday due to election day.
Ben Schoenhofff of Teutopolis Indiana reports three young men offered a ride near Bainbridge then beat him robbed him and dumped him from their car. He woke on the road minus shoes watch false teeth and $40. A passing motorist found him and brought him to Bulleting Brazil.
DePauw University hosts annual May Day events with the play Once There Was a Princess, May Day breakfast by Y W C A and Mortar Board pledges, ring exchanges, a coed track meet, and a May Day pageant In the Heart of Greenwood led by May Queen Helen Hester and her court. Visitors plan a repeat performance and Mother’s Day services with University Orchestra and Choir.

Carl Haxton Pottenger and Jesse LeRoy Riebsomer secure graduate assistantships in Chemistry at Washington University and Cornell respectively. Doris E. Smith receives a Mills College teaching fellowship. William Hargrave earns a political science scholarship at the University of Iowa. Everett Frank Stratton heads to Harvard as geology graduate assistant. Sharon Lea Finch receives a 1928 29 Latin scholarship at Cornell. Four physics scholarships go to Wendell H. Furry Wallace Lozier Sheron Peirce and Charles A. Whitmer. Presser Foundation grants Robert E. Phillips a scholarship Harriet G. Barnum a violin scholarship Chesteen Kendall a voice scholarship and Dwight Trezie a voice scholarship.
