The city library will receive roof tile replacement and a full interior overhaul during the summer months. Project marks the first major improvements since the building’s erection eleven years ago.
City library in Greencastle plans extensive improvements including roof repair once tile from Illinois factory arrives, interior overhaul, and water-damaged walls fixed. Cement front walk already repaired. Manufacturer to replace defective tile. cost to library board will be modest. After roof repair, Miss Belle Hanna awaits several new volumes.
Dr John R B Archer a Spencer Indiana Democrat and Second District party chairman lies near death at George Washington Hospital in Washington D C after acute intestinal trouble. He is a longtime vet and political figure with deep Indiana ties and a wife Mrs Flora Franklin. Denominational church notices accompany the brief item.
Depauw University officials and department heads will engage in various activities this summer. Many will visit points of interest across the United States.
DePauw University's faculty will spend summer in Greencastle or travel for research and vacations. Presidents and deans stay local with side trips. others head to Chicago, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Indiana University, and Colorado for studies, research, and rest.
Eighty three residents of the Third Ward sign a petition circulated by Spencer Mahan against the construction of a new junior high school. More signatures are expected.
Greencastle residents mobilize against a proposed junior high building as the school board advertises bond sales. Local organizer Spencer Mahan circulated a petition in south Locust street showing 88 of 104 approached oppose the project while five support and sixteen abstain.
Promises an easy path to home ownership in Greencastle with a limited, two year pay plan. Buyers pay 2 dollars to select a lot 8 dollars for a pass book and 1 dollar weekly with no interest taxes or payments during sickness or job loss. Sale opens Saturday at 7 am with ground salesmen on site and a free bus from Washington and Indiana streets every half hour 1 pm to 6 pm.
The Commercial Creamery Co. shut its Roachdale plant last Saturday. Aper of Lafayette, in charge, left for home. Cause cited include insufficient milk and cream flow and weak markets. Reorganization hoped before any restart. Also a tree limb blocked College Avenue until city workers cleared it.
W L Payne a colored soldier with two years and several months service will receive a three month furlough and may re enlist with same rank. The other man, recently discharged after years in service, is visiting relatives. He has been sergeant of the 24th Colored Infantry in the Philippines and expects to return to service. The Irish love the River Shannon. Shipley performs it on a cigar box with one string at the Opera House next Monday and Tuesday. adv.
