Fahak Fish of the Nile Inflates to Evade Predators
In the upper waters of the River Nile the fahak or Tetrodon fahaka inflates its body by gulping air. It rises to the surface and stretches its gullet to distend its abdomen, turning over to float on its back with spines erected. The inflated fish wards off attackers, including humans, by causing wounds to those that grip it. Air then escapes and the fish returns to normal.
