Decoration day in Greencastle featured ceremonies at Forest Hill Cemetery led by State Commander Metsger who delivered the day’s address. A large crowd attended as the University band led a parade from the square to decorate graves of soldiers.
DePauw ROTC ends the year with a 5 10 p m Wednesday drill on McKeen Field to crown the best company by military performance. Judges include Captains Graham Harney and Donnahue. Points cover a battalion parade drill rifle contest squad drill tug of war and other events with top scores guiding a final tally. Members winning may wear braids next year and all gear returns on June 4 or 5.
The Green Castle Rotary Club holds its regular meeting at the Christian church on Wednesday at noon. The women of the church will serve the luncheon.
Two Indianapolis youths Frances Noblett and John McShaney stole bicycles around May 10. Marshall O'Hair recovered the bikes with help from Indianapolis police, revealing sale to Theodore Adams and Albert McKay in Greencastle. One boy confessed and led police to the sellers.
A rare Andrew Jackson autograph on a 1831 letter by merchant tailor Christian Eckloff recounts a clerk in the State Department who failed to pay a $64.50 debt. Jackson’s endorsement urges discharge if the clerk does not settle, noting government should not employ dishonest officers. A postscript with initials confirms a ten dollar monthly arrangement via Amos Kendall.
President George R. Grose of DePauw University is welcomed back from the General Conference by students at a chapel service in Greencastle. Trustees’ Edward Rector praised Grose and noted Rector Hall funds while promising continued support. Grose pledged dedication to DePauw’s betterment.
Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes will visit DePauw on Thursday to speak at chapel, with the last chapel of the year set for Friday morning. President Grose urges full student attendance at the service. Dr. William Martin Blanchard, head of chemistry, returned from the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Ed Cooper of near Putnamville reports a missing old Ford from his Nat ional road home east of town and two prisoners from the Putnamville state farm believed to have fled Monday night with the vehicle. Police note Cooper’s car and the inmates disappeared together. A string of local visitors and travel adds context to the case.
Fulford A. Fulford and Dewey A. Davis both of Morgan County were married this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Rev. L. D. Dodd. Rev. Dodd officiated. The bride formerly worked as a switchboard operator at Clinton Falls and the groom is a mechanic. They will reside in Morgan County.
Citizens are urged to have all Democratic women in Putnam County present for a key suffrage rights event. Mrs. Alice Foster McCollough will speak at 4 PM in the courthouse on political guidance and advancement for women. Cora O'Brien asks supporters to welcome McCollough and notes the gathering features a strong turnout.
The Brunter system of submerged firing is a new steam production method. A high pressure gas jet ignites beneath the water surface in a steel steam generator, with a cast iron boiler receiving the liquid steam and combustion gases. Coal or oil fuels are used, reportedly with success by a German chemical firm.
The trial of Lewis D. LeMay, Clay County farmer, charged with the murder of neighbor Wilitu Lawson, opened in Putnam Circuit Court. The incident occurred on January 8 on Pinkley Street Road near Brazil. LeMay claims self defense after Lawson allegedly attacked with a revolver. defense attorney Bernard Craig and William Knight lead the case. Lawson previously ran a Reelsville saloon. The report notes related local notices and church activities, including a funeral for Jonathan G. Phillips and a death in Fillmore.
