SAY! (By CHARLES J. ARNOLD) presents a humorous slice of life with a farmer recalling sons returning home for winter, a classroom attempt at meter ending in a pun, and a girl in a barber shop observed by neighbors. The piece blends social observation with light humor about family and school.
Greencastle firemen rushed to 510 South Indiana Street Monday evening to extinguish a brush and weed fire in a back lot using chemical for containment. Mrs. Aliie Allen admitted lighting the pile with kerosene. neighbors alerted the fire department.
The London treaty restricting all classes of ships in the American British and Japanese navies was ratified by the Senate 58 to 9. After a half dozen reservations were dropped one reservation was adopted but requires no new talks. With Britain and Japan ratifying, the document will go into effect.
A Monday night shower broke a weeks long drought that damaged corn and other crops and ended the extreme heat wave for now. Farmers report wheat threshing paused but may resume if more rain comes. additional showers are expected soon to ease conditions.
L L Porter of South Bend purchases the L. C. Buchheit University Shop and the A. G. Brown residence in Northwood. He plans to move to Greencastle with his family August first, converting the business to a dedicated book shop. Porter and his wife are prominent South Bend residents relocating to Greencastle as their future home.
July 21 A bottle of home brew exploded in the hands of William Hayes causing his death. A fragment of glass severed an artery in his arm and he bled to death.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions with a slight cooldown tonight and Wednesday. Temperatures drop modestly, with the coolest readings in extreme southwest portions.
In Stillwater Minnesota 87 year old Civil War veteran Charley Lockwood held the last gathering of the Last Man's Club. Thirty three vacant chairs stood around him as he fulfilled a forty five year vow observing Bull Run anniversary. He closed the club's records and said there would be no reunions.
Earl W. Mendenhall, 40, was fined 100 dollars plus costs totaling 140.55 in city court after changing his plea to guilty on possession of intoxicating liquor found during a raid near the Clay county line. He received a suspended farm sentence and was released on bond pending further proceedings.
Rockville July 22. The state case against Hugh H. Banta former prosecuting attorney of Parke County charges malfeasance in office for allegedly receiving county funds totaling 2967.75 over two years. Vouchers claim the money covered detective work prosecution travel stenographic tasks and grand jury expenses. The matter drew county attention after Banta was narrowly nominated for judge. The hearing was continued pending agreed statements.
Trustees of Putnam County announce an annual picnic at Allendale on Thursday. It will be an all day event with horse shoe pitching, rowing and clay pigeon shooting. A bountiful noon dinner will be served.
The Greencastle band seeks weekly donations to cover about $40 in costs, but only $2 is being raised. If merchants and business men do not increase support, Thursday concerts may end for the season after 15 years of activity.
An oil lamp left burning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John O Munlane on North Main Street in Cloverdale exploded near midnight Monday. The Cloverdale volunteer fire department used chemicals and a bucket brigade to control the blaze, causing interior and roof damage worth several hundred dollars. William Sackett sustained a leg injury and Miss Emma McAnich a facial cut while helping fight the fire, with most losses partly covered by insurance.
Dr. Frank H. Brown of Fort Ville has been re elected State veterinarian by the State livestock sanitary board. He will serve for one year. Elisha Zeiner of Fillmore, injured when a colt fell on him, is slowly recovering in Putnam County Hospital.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle the Eel River rose flooding bottom land and damaging crops. Cornelia Allen, daughter of Mr and Mrs J P Allen Jr, planned birthday celebrations. Rev Henry Ostrom left for Mountain Lake Park Maryland for summer. Mary land. Anna Morris remodels home at Jackson and Poplar.

Indianapolis July 22 The state conservation chief Richard Lieber denied charges by W E L Evans of Newcastle a state representative and Indiana Fish Game and Forest League president. Evans claimed Lieber used influence to sway governors and force game wardens to contribute to campaigns.
Special Judge Theodore Crawley dismissed the case against George Hamilton after witnesses gave opposing testimony about threats. The incident began with a city court charge for drawing a butcher knife on Frank Anderson and involved multiple venue changes and judges.
Greencastle Post 58 of the American Legion launched an employment bureau to help unemployed Putnam county veterans find work. The free service is for all veterans, plans for Armistice Day events were set, a mid August Legion picnic was arranged, and the next meeting was scheduled for July 28 in Russellville with transit provisions noted. Kenneth Cox of Indianapolis visited, formerly a local lawyer.
Roachdale Indiana July 22 Matilda Yount Birch aged 76 died at home Saturday night after illness from paralysis and pneumonia. Born August 28 1853 in Shelby County Kentucky she moved to Indiana as a girl and married James W Birch. She belonged to Roachdale Methodist Church survived by husband a daughter two sisters two brothers and two grandchildren. Services were at 2:50 Monday at the Birch home conducted by Rev Ragan. Burial in Roachdale cemetery.
County officials raided the old Terry place southeast of Greencastle Monday night and arrested Johnnie White 87 and Joe Richardson 27 for possession of intoxicating liquor. Officers seized several quarts of home brew and found bottles hidden in a garden basket. No evidence of production was found.
Kersey Bros of Washington township submitted the lowest bid of 1275 for the government Intermediate Landing Field project, 500 less than the next bidder Kight, with Maurice and Oscar Kersey listed as bidders. The field must be completed within 45 days of contract award. Ed Simmons of Marton township is slightly improved after hospitalization for medical treatment.
