Greencastle column notes hot weather and a new incident with State Motor cop McMillan who mistakes a 35 year old man for a 16 year old driver. It also pokes fun at weeds, local business shifts, car tests, a weight joke at J. F. Cannon store, and a playful scene of a woman stepping off scales joking about whipping her husband.
A wheat thresher valued at 1400 dollars was destroyed by dynamite on the Oliver H Black farm two miles south of Kent Indiana early today. The Yepsback Company of Sellersburg owned the machine and planned to start threshing at the Black farm. Authorities report no trace of the perpetrators.
City council awards paving contract to W E Pickens by a three to two vote after bids. Pickens bid 24491, Wright and Sweet 24448.50 failed to include two catch basins. A tunnel under College Ave for DePauw heating pipes also approved. Miss Eulalia Fox mentioned in closing lines.
A Greencastle Chautauqua Association meeting of guarantors and directors is set for next Tuesday at 2 30 PM in the County Agent's office. J Oscar Hall of the Loar Independent Chautauqua Company will attend to explain guarantors' status and whether to pay a 10 forfeit and drop the event or support its continuation. Local interest has waned, risking abandonment of the summer program.
The forecast calls for likely showers and thunder storms tonight and Sunday with little temperature change.
The Indiana Supreme Court affirms Edward S. Shumaker's 60 day state farm sentence and $250 fine for contempt. He may appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, with a decision due next Monday. The court also blocks Ira M. Holmes from claiming Indianapolis mayoral status, leaving Slack and Hogue as the leading candidates.
Harold Cramer of Bath and Thomas Parker of Chicago were killed instantly when a bolt struck their flatboat during a Deep Waterways Project survey. Five others aboard survived.
Greencastle Herald editor receives a letter from a citizen disputing yesterday's report on Prosecutor Dickerson. The writer claims the piece reveals a confession and argues for issuing a search warrant to seize all gambling devices, asserting officer inaction and duty concerns.
The Herald launches "Indiana Beautiful" to showcase Indiana resorts state parks and beauty spots with descriptive illustrated articles by IL H. C. Reid of the Hoosier Motor Association. Merchants in Greencastle back the effort to inform motorists about roads hotels and attractions for a pleasant Indiana vacation.
Edna Elder of Roachdale under Miss Elizabeth Lockridge gave a pianoforte recital last evening in Roachdale. Prof. and Mrs. Blanchard departed for Norfolk. A lawn fete hosted by John Halbert Stoner and Ormand Hammond at Indiana street drew a well attended gathering.
Fifteen governments including Japan and Czecho Slovakia accept a seven hundred word covenant renouncing war as state policy. The treaty, in force for vast military powers, aims to curb the world’s warring machinery. Signing may occur in Paris with Kellogg prepared to travel to Europe by mid August.
Orville Spike Alexander was arrested Friday night by Officers Grimes and Kerr on charges of assault and battery on his wife and public intoxication. His wife filed the assault charge after he returned home intoxicated and allegedly struck her. Alexander received a $10 fine and costs on intoxication, and a suspended 50 day sentence on the assault charge with a planned move to South Bend.
Joseph H. Denny 16 son of Mr and Mrs Merrill Denny of two miles south of Brownsburg drowned while swimming in White Lick creek last night stepping into a deep hole. Eight companions searched for about a half hour before his body was recovered. Funeral services set for 2 PM Sunday at the home with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Lonnie Evans, about 50, of Manhattan, was severely burned when he slipped into live wood ashes from the boiler firebox at Chew & Mercer saw mill south of Pleasant Gardens. He was taken to Community hospital in Brazil with deep facial and chest burns and serious injuries to both hands. Evans and his elderly father, Joe Evans, recently moved from near Poland and live together. Evans is single and cares for his father.
About twenty six boys and girls from the county 4 H Club will depart Monday for Camp Merom near Sullivan on a special traction trailer from the Interurban station at 10 37 AM. Leaders accompanying them include Miss Hazel Arbuckle and Miss Ethel Ader of Greencastle, E W Baker of Russellville, County Agent R H Stevenson, and Miss Carol Shoultz Health Nurse. The camp runs Monday through Friday with training in 4 H Club activities for attendees from several counties including Dorothy Harlan Anthus Hunter Edna Mae Albin Vera Grace Brown Demna Maddox Mary Riley Mary Ellen Trout Meredith Reeves Bernice Ruark Charlotte Etter Dorothy Arnold Margaret Durham Agnes Baughman Winifred Grimes Margaret Bain Ancil Clark Roy Shannon Albert Goff Morris McGaughey Roy Humphrey Stanley O Hair Frank Crosby Howard Riggles Wayne Thompson and Howard Burkett.
Roy O West of Chicago is named by President Coolidge to replace Hubert Work as secretary of the interior. West, a national committeeman from Illinois, recently visited the president at the summer White House in Brule Wisconsin and had beforehand denied Cabinet interest. Work will focus on Republican national committee duties.
Roy O. West announces acceptance of the post to succeed Dr. Hubert Work and will go to Washington to begin duties. West, a DePauw graduate, has long been active in Republican politics since 1908 and served as Chicago city attorney and county official before entering national party leadership roles.
