The calamity editor presses to condemn a building while the Herald warns the local high office. William Alexander and his daughter from Portland Mills visited the city today.
The Hussar Band delivered a popular concert Monday evening as the major entertainment of the Chautauqua program. The event drew praise and plans were launched to bring the Chautauqua company back to the city next summer.
The Royal Black Hussar Band attracted the largest crowd of the week at Lincoln Chautauqua. The 18 member ensemble showcased highly praised numbers including The Fall of Jericho and My Regards, with soloists McDermos and Mr Howard receiving encores. Interest grew in a possible repeat engagement next summer as subscriptions and support built.
A large audience welcomed the Hazel Folsom Daggy Company with a musical program before Miss Kearney’s lecture. Coloratura soprano Miss Folsom Daggy, backed by Carl Lindegren, Helen Dodge, and Gertrude Paiiskinsky, performs this evening, with Lindegren a major draw. Dr. George LaMonte Cole will give an illustrated talk on Southwest Indian Life, and Congressman Fred S. Jackson of Kansas will speak twice, followed by two musical features by the National Grand Opera Company and a performance of The Bohemian Girl.
C Sayers lowers the former 18 hole score record while both Sayers and Irving Brown set a new six hole mark with a 25 stroke round at the course.
Sayers and Brown both broke the 18 hole and six hole course marks Monday afternoon at Observaory Golf. Brown first to break a record with 25 on six holes while Sayers logged 85 for 18 and 26 for six. Details of rounds include Brown 4 5 3 4 5 4 and 25 total. Sayers first round 8 plus three further rounds, 25 for the six hole score. Probable compromise emerges as council members may accept a state utilities commission recommendation to grant a rate increase for the city water works company. Standby actions and public input expected as the proposal moves forward.
Greencastle city leaders expect Utilities Commission to back a compromise on water rates. The dispute centers on plant valuation and the risk of bankruptcy if an outright rate increase or contract voiding occurs. A special meeting is likely to decide the path forward.
