The board of review shows land values for real estate are raised by 30 cents per acre compared with the previous four year equalization assessment. This four year process adjusts tax assessments across parcels to reflect current values.
The Putnam County Board of Review has completed a four year equalization, revealing land values this year average 24.13 per acre, up 0.30 from 1911. The combined value of land and improvements rose 0.40 per acre, with township figures listed for land and land plus improvements, plus bank and corporation assessments including Putnam Electric, Bainbridge Canning, Greencastle cabinet and water companies. Local residents Mary McLee Smith and J J Smiley noted.
A small cyclone struck the Frank Rightsell farm four miles south of Reelsville on Saturday evening. The wind toppled about 20 large trees in timber land, creating a narrow path through the woods. In another area roughly 15 trees were blown down.
The Greencastle band appears set to perform at the Cloverdale picnic on July 29 in Putnam County after talks with organizers. Justice George E. Law known as the Marrying Squire has recovered from a six week illness and is back at No. 13 North Franklin street ready to resume appointments. He announces he is prepared to make all comers happy and seeks customers. A tailored made suit line at reduced prices is offered by The Fashion store in West Side Square.
An expert engineer demonstrates the huber road roller with a scarifier attachment as city council members watch. Walnut Street improvements are underway and satisfactory work is reported.
The city council watched a demo of the purchased Huber road roller on Walnut Street. The scarifier teeth loosen the macadam, the surface is graded and rolled smooth, and officials predict the unit will greatly aid future street maintenance. An expert from Huber will conduct a five day demonstration.
Greencastle gasoline dealers receive notices from the fire marshal warning that underground tanks are required. A fine of ten or fifty dollars may be assessed on conviction for failure to provide underground tanks.
State fire marshal orders merchants garages and heavy gasoline users in Greencastle to install underground storage tanks within forty days. Noncompliance risks daily fines from ten to fifty dollars. Officials cite frequent accidents and urge proper containment.
The general fire marshal law of 1913 authorizes above ground storage of up to ten gallons in an approved safety can. Any larger quantity must be stored underground to comply with safety mandates.
Threshing outfits started in Putnam county with crews near Putnamville and Belle Union. Farmers expect a stronger yield than usual, though Hessian fly damage affected several fields.
