A Greencastle writer shares dated travel rules for women traveling alone, advising packing a lunch box with jelly sandwiches and peaches, seating to face forward, securing valuables, avoiding talk with strangers, keeping tickets hidden, and remaining vigilant to prevent theft on trains.
Two typhoid fever cases are reported in the county. Abner Cox, 13 miles west of town near the Park County line, and William Dreher near Reelsville on the Clay County line, are ill. Dreher may have contracted the disease from farm water. water samples have been sent to the state laboratory.
Greencastle Merchants Booster nine defeated the Hoosier Cubs 9 to 6 at Limedale park behind Target pitching nine strikeouts. The seventh inning produced six runs for Abel’s club, while Greencastle had five errors and Jackson held the hill for the visitors. Next Sunday the Merchants travel to Stilesville with Target again slated to start and Mike Black behind the plate.
William H. Edmundson 35 of Indianapolis paid a total fine of 11 dollars after pleading guilty to reckless driving in Greencastle City Court. State Police Officer William Nisbet filed the charge after arrest on State Road 40 near Putnamville, alleging Edmundson passed a car on a hill and forced the officer off the road.
Mostly fair tonight with clear skies. Tuesday brings warmer temperatures especially in the extreme north portion.
Harold "Gat" Gardner of Greencastle, about 18, was arrested at 5 am by Officer George Knauer after the Lueteke Bakery delivery to William Kocher Restaurant showed missing goods. He is jailed on a vagrancy charge amid a history as a habitual petty criminal and prior bootlegging sentence. Gardner has been warned by police and the mayor to seek employment and stop frequenting pool halls.
Putnam county board of education held its regular meeting with county superintendent John Vermillion present. The board decided to hold the annual trustees picnic at Allendale on Thursday July 24, a well attended event.
Frank Butler won the Northwood Golf tournament defeating H. N. Hardy in the final Sunday afternoon. Butler had beaten Wheeler in the semifinals while Hardy defeated C. D. Chapman. Several matches were played Sunday morning. the tournament began last Sunday and continued on July 4.
Called meeting at Temple Lodge No 47 Monday at 7 30 p m. F C degree conducted with W C Long, W M and FE E Caldwell sec to preside and close the session with official duties performed.
London reports via Tokio dispatch that 27 people died and thousands were left homeless after strong quakes struck the Yamagataken district in Japan. The telegram notes widespread damage and ongoing relief efforts.
Walter Hacker, 28, a farmer six miles north of Bloomington, was killed instantly by a lightning bolt during a severe thunderstorm. He and his brother Noble, 20, sought shelter in an attic to inspect the roof when the bolt struck the chimney and descended to hit Hacker. The widow and brother survive.
In Flint Michigan police and state troopers backed by Michigan National Guardsmen manage a strike at auto plants where over 4000 workers walked out for higher wages. About 200 workers returned to work as negotiations fail. The strikers rejected the company offer to restore the 1929 wage scale and pledged wages not to be cut for six months.
Most of Greencastle residents will appear in the Old Melody Concert to be staged July 22 and 23 under the First Christian church Woman's Union. B B Henry of Indianapolis will direct. about 110 local participants form the cast. The program includes old songs specialty numbers and a short play. First general rehearsal is Tuesday at the Christian church with tickets on sale next Wednesday.
Joseph Rollings aged 22 of Reelsville a brick plant worker and Ruth Inger aged 1 year from Cardonia are listed as residents in the household record.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle the Vermillion county hill climb in Newport promised a display of skill as drivers vie for several silver loving cups. Local motorists planned to enter the event and bring attention to the region amid summer travels. Mrs. S. A. Hays and daughter Lillian left for Bay View Michigan for the season, while Miss Pearl O'Hair visited Chautauqua New York.
The fatal collision on the National road near the Ray Vaughn farm left Miss Ruth Steele 22 of Indianapolis dead at the scene and Mrs Mariel Ax 42 of Brazil died later in Clay County Hospital. John S Woolven of Indianapolis faces potential manslaughter charges in Putnam Circuit Court while a reckless driving citation had been issued earlier.
Mrs. Rebecca Newman aged 76, a well known Greencastle resident, died Sunday at 4 45 pm at her sister Mrs Rhoda McAninch’s home in Coatesville after a stroke last Tuesday. She was widow of Joseph Newman who died two years ago at Easter and had lived in Greencastle for over thirty years.
Greene County reports an outbreak leading to a 120 day quarantine for all dogs and cats. After 30 days, vaccinated dogs within the last six months may be released.
Miss Virginia G. Markham resigns after five years leading the Latin Department at Greencastle High School. She will head the Latin Department at Lincoln-Wilk School in Cleveland, Ohio. Superintendent Warren J. Yount has not named a replacement, and no candidate is yet under consideration as Markham travels Europe on a Virgilian tour. Her departure leaves a strong record, including pupil Morton Brown of Northwood winning the state Latin contest and posting the top score among all competitors.
A DePauw University second semester grade report shows coeds ahead of men scholastically. Delta Zeta tops sororities with a 2442 rating and plus 1 index. Delta Chi leads fraternities with 1.039 and plus 3, ranking fourth among nine percent groups.
Chicago state's attorney says he will subpoena Harry T. Brundidge of the St. Louis Star to test claims that Chicago newspapers employ reporters tied to political graft and gangs. Brundidge offered to testify, while Los Angeles dispatches note plans to pursue extradition for a slain officer case and related investigations continue.
Putnam county commissioners met to address H. Barnaby and 400 others petitioning to pave the south fork of the Washington street road near Greencastle. A counter petition by William B. Peek and 500 others opposing the pavement was presented, likely blocking the project.
The Greencastle Country club will entertain Crawfordsville golfers here Sunday in an all day affair. Dinner will be served at the Country club. Mr and Mrs Lincoln Wimmer host guests Mrs Grace Heller and her daughter Dorothy Ann Asberger of Birmingham Alabama, a niece of Mrs Wimmer.
