Head of a Family Exemption Rules and Tax Relief
Unmarried men and women who are pean winners and heads of families receive special exemptions under the tax law. An ordinary $1,000 personal exemption rises to $2,000 for heads of families plus $200 for each dependent under 18 or mentally or physically defective. The dependent must be chiefly supported by the taxpayer, not including servants or the married spouse.
