The forecast shows continued very cold conditions with temperatures down near 105 above zero and clear moonlit nights across Green Castle. The weather service cautions residents as the cold spell persists and wind remains light to moderate.
The Greencastle area felt the first real touch of winter as temperatures dropped to near freezing. Residents bundled in heavy coats and fur outerwear while heating systems ran at full capacity. The Weather Bureau foresees several days of continued cold, with social notes mentioning visits by County Treasurer Hagan and County Commissioner Bunten Filmore to Vo Cline for Sunday dinner.
Madison Warren and Greencastle township teachers met for their monthly institute at L G Wright’s office Saturday with Ben S King presiding. Topics included Everyday Problems in Teaching by Miss Jennie Strain and Sociology and Modern Social Problems by Miss Kate Lovett. The host townships adopted a memorial resolution for trustee J W Stroube, praising his devotion and service and ordering copies sent to his wife and daughter and published.
The Progressive party district convention for Indiana Fifth District will meet in the Circuit Court room in Brazil Clay County on January 20 1914 at 11:00 am to elect a district chairman and conduct other business. Greencastle January 12 1914 R H Crouch chairman Fifth District.

Filmore Christian Church announces a splendid year with attendance up 148 percent over 1912. The organization highlights continued growth and steady participation in weekly sessions.
The secretary reports average pupil and teacher attendance for 1913 at 90, a 148 percent increase from 1912. Financials show total collections 68.80 and expenditures 65.09. Officers for 1914 include Superintendent Alva Lisby, Assistant Supt Harvey Nichols, Secretary Lola Proctor, Lucile Siddons, Elijah Cowgill, Organists Edith Ruark and Ethel Jackson, and Chor Leader Vivian Siddons.
Marion Hinkle a Monon Railroad car repairer celebrated his 45th birthday with about forty friends at his North Jackson street home on Saturday evening. The gathering featured games a musical program and light refreshments.
The state fire marshal estimates each city family pays 8 to 10 dollars yearly for fire protection as Indiana cities invest nearly 5 million dollars in equipment with 1.5 million dollars yearly upkeep. City fire departments employ 1,097 full time firefighters and 1,300 volunteers. A 19 year old Turkish worker Jim Alley was sentenced by Judge James P. Hughes to 1 to 8 years at the Jeffersonville Reformatory after a trial in Greencastle. He stole a $5 bill clothes and from a coworker at Root Glass Works Fern. He was arrested in Brazil following a stint in Terre Haute. Marshal John Cooper disrupted bootlegging in Greencastle by arresting a south Greencastle man with a quart of alcohol and securing confessions. Dr H B Gough of DePauw University will address the Young Men's Bible Class on four topics from January to February. Miss Pearl Young remains seriously ill with pneumonia.
Smoke issued from the basement in the Williamson Block near Sudranski Dept store set off a fire alarm at 7:45 AM. Fire crews found no blaze after breaking a door to enter and suspect the smoke from a potting stove used by C. F. Zeis the grocer storing many bushels of potatoes. A watchman was placed for further inspection.
Fire department responds to a still alarm at the Grand Central Hotel formerly Belnap Hotel about 9 15 am. The fire on the roof of the two story frame section caused only minor damage after owner Jesse Lewman and bystanders fought the blaze with a passing car driver delivering responders.
C. A. Kelley conducts business in the city of St Louis over a span of several days, engaging in trade and financial transactions with local merchants and firms.
Fire gutted Wade Anwary Burns residence early Monday morning in Fillmore. Flames, believed started by a defective flyer, totally destroyed the structure but household goods were saved.
Mrs. Walton awoke to a blaze at the one and a half story frame home of her son in law Wade McNary. Fire around 2 30 am destroyed the roof with several rooms lost though most household goods were saved. McNarys face near $1000 loss partly covered by insurance. The fire likely started from a defective Hue or spark from a passing train.
