In Paisley Scotland a motion picture theatre fire scare triggered a mass trampling in the Glen theatre. Sixty nine children died and about 37 more were hospitalized as panic and smoke overcame the crowded crowd after a supposed fire. The tragedy prompts scrutiny of matinee policies for children and a mass funeral plan with local help.
Robert Gifford of Bainbridge died Tuesday morning at his home after a cancer illness. Funeral services were held this afternoon. He is survived by his widow and a stepdaughter. He was a cousin of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Brown and Mrs. Harriet Callahan of this city, who attended the funeral.
Attorneys for the Board of County Commissioners filed a demurrer to William Welch’s injunction against the Cox road improvement in Madison township. The December 2 petition alleged irregularities in preparation, claiming no hearing within thirty days and improper bond authority, while the demurrer argues the engineer’s report closes the incident and appeals lie to a higher court, not injunction.
Greencastle 1929 building activity fell about 25 percent from 1928. Chamber of Commerce figures note that 1928 included the new Methodist church and Lone Star cement plant work begun last year and completed this year. Total value reached 380000 with 24 residences and various repairs. Prospects for 1930 are favorable.
Albert Dobbs announces the new name for his North Square business to avoid confusion and better identify the shop. The establishment was formerly Consolidated Tire and Battery Company.
Freeman Huff chosen as superintendent of the Christian Church Sunday School with Albert Shuey as assistant. Roachdale visitors include Joe Kline, cashier at Roachdale Bank, and Drake Brookshire, ex commissioner. Jasper Miller among courthouse officials taking office today. Mayor elect John R. Miller and entourage to assume office Monday at noon.
Review of the year highlights Hoover inauguration Kellogg treaty Graf Zeppelin circumnavigation and Byrd south pole flight are named as top events with the Wall Street crash. Other major stories include Lindbergh marriage and the Cleveland clinic fire disaster with 128 lives lost.
At Thursday noon the Kiwanis club will install the 1930 officers during the regular meeting at the Christian church. Milt Brown the lieutenant governor of Indiana Kiwanis Fifth District will be honored and R P Mullins leads the program.
All Barrett law books, previously held by the retiring county treasurer, were turned over to Gwin Ensign by Alva E. Lisby. Ensign will not open the books until January 6 to avoid posting a $25,000 bond.
Albert Cassle aged 59 a car inspector for the Pennsylvania railroad and former local inspector was killed in Terre Haute when a car he had crawled under to inspect ran over him He had lived on Highland street since moving here several years ago.
A Tuesday afternoon crash at the junction of the Clayton road and the National road involved a Dodge coupe from Dayton and an Essex sedan heading west. The Dodge rolled over once after impact. the Essex bore a Jefferson county Kentucky plate and was badly smashed. One occupant was thrown through the windshield but no serious injuries were reported. Names of the occupants were not learned.
Rain and colder tonight with Thursday partly cloudy to cloudy and colder. Possible rain in the extreme south portion.
Mr and Mrs Paul Lowe residents south of the city suffered a severe accident Tuesday when their car skidded in front of a moving van and was demolished. Both were badly bruised and their two children were shaken. Mr Lowe sustained three fractured ribs and is believed to have hip fracture as well. The crash occurred on the National road just east of Stilesville.
Indianapolis January 1 Thirteen hunters died and thirty two were wounded or injured in Indiana during December per an International News Service tally. Causes ranged from fellow hunters shooting companions to accidental gun discharges and falls with loaded weapons.
A Cincinnati man driving to a birthday party crashed into Buck Creek bridge on State Road 62 near Indianapolis. Five injured including Mrs Reichert seriously. A Greyhound bus crossing soon after the crash had floor collapse, narrowly avoiding a mass casualty.
The Putnam County commissioners, meeting today before the January session, will fill two hospital board vacancies. The terms of Mrs. Frank Davis of Roachdale and Gil Bert Ogles expired, with Ogles newly serving as county treasurer after resigning from the board. Also due for renewal are the posts of county attorney and health officer, currently John H. James and Dr. Cecil O'Brien.
Charles Phelps Taft, 88, half brother of William Howard Taft, died in Cincinnati from pneumonia contracted last Saturday. A publisher and philanthropist, Taft helped found the Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the May musical festival, and the Cincinnati Zoological Gardens and summer operas.
